C320 CDI mileage vs US gas cars

If some of these mileage numbers are based on removing the fuel nozzle when it shuts off, I have a news flash for you. It ain't full.

My C320 is two gallons from full when that happens and there is no rational argument for saying mine is the only one that is that way. I always top it off even though it takes several minutes to dribble in the last two gallons because that provides forty more miles of driving.

BTW, the W203 C320 AC compressor does not have a clutch but rather uses a variable swashplate controlled by the main brain. Therefore, one cannot feel the compressor cut in and out because it doesn't. And that's why, even after the Economy button is pushed to shut the AC off, you still feel cold air for a while because the flow of refrigerant is sloooowly shut off.

Since the C240 and the coupe AC systems are simpler, this may not apply to them although an AC clutch is clearly visible on compressors so equipped.

When gas was over $3, I would short shift & get 26 MPG. in the street On a 50-60 mile trip I got 39+ MPG. Iwas following my nephew, who was towing his race car,so we probably averaged 50MPH. I have an '04 SS/6 speed. Driving style really affects MPG

Somewhere, someone had posted that putting the car in W would get you better mileage. I can vouch for that. I'm getting about 29mpg fwy, and 22mpg city.

See Garage
I started a new job. 17 mile commute over a curvy, two-lane country road, double yellow line all the way, speed limit 50mph. I can occassionally push above the limit, but within a mile or two, I invariably run up behind some taco wagon pulling a duellie lawn mower equipment trailer poking along at 45mph, to avoid speeding violations/trip back to Mexico.

Anyway, I can't drive very fast as a result. To the good side, my gas mileage is really great... Last tank, I got 382 miles between fill-ups, average speed 36mph for a take fuel economy of 25.0mpg. No A/C used. Not bad at all for the 3.2L V6.

wow, I'm not seeing numbers anywhere close to this on my 2002 C230K coupe six speed! My car has 43k. I typically see low 20s/high teens all city with alot of stop and go. On the highway cruising around 85 I get around 26. Could this be indicitive of a bad MAF? I have no check engine light or idle problems though...

Thoughts?

I'm seeing similar numbers to that in my car, as mentioned before. I'm not sure if there is a problem with my car, or if its just my right foot.

a quarter mile at a time
I get 18-20 in the city, 16mpg if I'm driving like I stole the car and 28-32mpg on the highway. In a recent trip I was able to get over 500miles from a tank of gas, all highway miles.

Drive at least... 45 miles a day... I can last a full 7 days on one tank, ending up around the yellow indicator light. Mostly highway driving with an average speeds around the 45-50.

my mpg indicator will range anywhere from 22.5 to 27.8 with an avg of around 24.5. is that good or bad? You guys w/ the 230s get incredible gas mileage. esp w/ the 230 kompressors. im jealous!

John, your gas mileage is still quite good at that rate.

2007 C230 Sport manual
I am a newbie on this forum...I drive a 2004 c230 SS with manual transmission. I commute into Manhattan every working day...roughly 50 miles round-trip. I also do a fair amount of long-distance highway driving. Normal commuting can be roughly 26mpg. On the highway, I do not drive by speed, but RPM.....at roughly 3,000 rpm I get roughly 33 mpg....in 6th gear, that is a nice speed

I got average 23-27 (2/3 heavy city traffic, 1/3 midium highway) on daily commute to 13 mile far work. On long drive (+4 hour freeway driving) i got 31 to 32. I usually go fill up at 350 mile from a full tank. Very happy with it.

If you were doing all stop and go, it is on the low side. If you were doing fwy driving, it's terribly low. Try keeping the revs below 3k. Do it for a tank of gas and see where you are.

How is your service history. Clogged air filters, low tire pressure, etc, these things effect your mileage.

My driving is pretty much all stop and go. I would blame it on a heavy left foot but I have been watching that lately due to the ever growing number of traffic violations. I'll give it a shot.

I just had my A Service done about 3k miles ago and I wasn't informed of anything. The car is an '01 but very low mileage. Tires stay properly inflated and all I put in the car is premium.

Try increasing your tire pressure about 2 psi in the front, 3 psi in the back. For just one tank of gas. As long as the ride is not to harsh that can help quite a bit. Best way is to get a high quality air gauge. Don't trust the things at the gas station. I don't know your tires, but a safe bet to be at is about 36 in the front, and 38 in the rear. Your tires should be able to take this.

When you start keeping revs below 3k, your going to feel so frustrated. Ignore this, and just be patient. You'll get used to it.

thanks for the advice man. i'll give it a shot this evening. i wanna say im running 33 in the front and 35 in the rear. i have Continental Contisport tires.

i know...i honestly think i keep them fairly low MOST of the time but a few times a week i'll usually "get on it" for whatever reason.
