A box on 4 wheels
I mess around with it here and there, but overall I think we should let the computer do the gear switching for you^^

sorry, I don't see the point of changing gears manually on cars with automatic transmission.

1. it's not that pleasurable (I've tried it before on the loaner car)
2. it does not make the car perform any better, that is, unless you're a super driver.

I rarely use the touchshift feature, even with the convenient buttons on the back of my steering wheel. The AMG speedshift in M mode on the C55 does shift faster than the touchshift on my old C240, but it is still not any faster than if I left the transmission in S mode. In fact, shifting myself with the buttons feels a touch slower than if I just let the computer do it.

In the C55, leaving the transmission in S mode results in the quickest and best timed shifts if you want to go as fast as possible. I think this is true even in the non-AMG cars.

When the Mercedes one becomes normal and I don't have to tap the shifter left and right I'll use it, until then, I think BMW has the best one. Pull back to upshift, push forward to downshift.

Nice. I didn't know the Cayennes had the key on the left side of the wheel for a left-drive car. That's interesting. Cause any problems for you, Bing? Like poking at the dash with your key before realizing .... oh, yeah. The other side. Right.

BTW, he means "whatever" by the w/e. Just so you know.

On the touch shift topic, yeah, it's fun once in a while. Really, the best utility for it is on twisty roads or downhill where you may want to stay in 2nd or 3rd. That's about it. Other than that it doesn't give you enough credit in deciding your gear selection sometimes, so it gets frustrating at times.

Have you noticed in the Bimmers where that is swapped? Where up is up shift and back is downshift? I've yet to figure out a method to the madness, because of the many 3 and 5 series I've seen that come equipped with tiptronic, none are ever consistant between MY or model. An option maybe? I prefer the up-back and down-forward style myself.

If the BMW is swapped, it's an easy fix, just ask your dealer
All the new Porsches have their keys on the left hand side.

There's a show on tv that says the reason why Porsche cars got the ignition key on the left was because back in the old days when the race started, race drivers at le mans had to run to the race cars and start the engines and it was more convient to have the ignition key on the left-hand side. Porsche decided to do that with their production cars.

Yep, I also read that in some Porsche literature I got from the dealer when I was doing a project on Porsches a while back for school.

I used to drive stick, but decided to get my c230 auto. I know, a ton of my friends cringed when I got a kompressor with automatic...but, yeah...whatevers it's my car.

I initially thought driving triptonic or whatever would be exciting and fun, but it doesn't beat stick for sure. I don't even really bother with it. I agree with everyone else in that if the car is meant to shift, let it do it by itself.

I think the only time I've used it is maybe to downshift instead of braking when a cop comes by or something so that it doesn't appear as if I was speeding. =P Tee hee..

That is absolutely the funniest signature ever - and disgusting at the same time...

Anyway, if you wanted to shift on your own, you should have gotten a 6spd. I'd vote for just letting the computer do its job.

I use it when on the highway in my E500. I hold to the left, step down and zooooom.. Off like a rocket. Faster then if I stepped down.

I haven't tried this in my C240 although in the E with 7 gears this might be an advantage.

my only experience is with an 03 thunderbird which is forward and backward...not the side to side crap. when i’m using/playing in that mode, i am mostly doing it to hold gears and not so much to use them for going up and down the sequence for normal driving.

I used to drive stickshift in my old car, but now i have Tiptronic.

Yes it lags and is NO Where near as responsive, but its still handy to have when you need it.

I use tiptronic in Peak Hour/Rush Hour/Bumper to Bumper/Grid Lock whatever you want to call it. Its good to hold a gear so you can switch lanes without lag or stepbck between the gears.

Summary: Yes it Lags, but good to use when you've mastered it. It in no was replaces Stickshift! IMO i like it but it can be improved.

:p Did you not read my post. I decided to get an automatic, despite what people thought. I definitely vote for letting the computer do its job. Why shift, when the car can do it for you. =)

I use it in town when the speed limit is lower. It's a lot easier to keep it at 25 in 3rd than 5th.
