Thanks.

Go down to your local Mercedes-Benz retailer, act VERY interested in purchasing a C230 THAT DAY. Joke around with the saleman, be kind to him. Politely ask to test-drive a new Coupe to make sure you like it. Drive the car..........and never return it. See ya!

i'd make some phone calls. there's got to be ton of mb dealers in the san francisco (or nearby) area. try benzo's recommendation - Jack Golden at Stahl Motors here in Monterey. i think most dealers will have a couple in stock. of course, that means you may have to compromise... you can't wait?
don't steal the car as mbtech suggests... for a MB employee, sometimes he gives strange advice

Go to the MB website and get the names and numbers of every dealer in your area, as far flung as you are willing to go to pick up the car.
Ask them what they have in stock to sell. BUT ALSO ask what they have incoming in the next month!! They can check their "incoming" list. If they have an incoming that meets the specs of what you want, their is a good chance that it will be available to you when it arrives, because a very high percentage of customers who order cars back out. Something like 30%+, my dealer tells me.
If the incoming car still has a buyer attached, tell the salesmonke...errr, saleman to call you when the buyer backs out. You then put a deposit on it, and its yours.
I know it works, because my salesmonke . . . err, salesman did the exact same thing to me. Ordered the wrong car, but then didn't bother to tell me until it arrived, hoping he could talk me into a car I didn't order or want.
I didn't want to wait 3 more months again. So I made a bunch of calls and took deliver within a couple of weeks.

How long is the current waiting list in bay area?
order a car shouldnt take more than 3-4 months.
In fact look for dealers' "incoming list" to see whats available I dont think all cars are pre-ordered and given the current economic situation (twice as worse in bay area vs the whole nation) many people back out.
As long as the car hasnt gone into production, the dealer can change to any option, color they want and getting a car of your choice in 2 months is realistic.
Of course, you can buying off the lot but many I saw are fully equipped with options not everyone wants (heated seat, command, auto, no C7)
C230K has become very popular these days in the Bay, I saw at least a few each week, but Magma Red + C7 wheels are still quite rare and I feel snobbish about my 6sp which is probably only 1 in 8 are with 6sp

I have one for sale - it is a C320 with the COMAND option. It is about 5 months old. If you are interested, let me know at mcooper@wagged.com.

I 'ordered' my car by 'changing' the specs on a car that was already allocated to a dealer before it was built. This reduced my wait time to 2.5 months.

The dealers down in So Cal have plenty of C-Coupes, almost too many. Check with Mark Hoye at MB of Laguna Niguel, (mhoye@mbzdirect.com) or Fletcher Jones in Newport Beach. I know Mark sells to folks in the Bay area all the time.
