Taking them apart isn't hard at all, did it to replace an igniter.

Remove the headlight from the car.

Pop off the rubber seal, then use a hair dryer to heat up the edges (where the clear lens meets the grey plastic) like crazy, then slowly pry. DO NOT USE A SCREWDRIVER OR ANY METAL TOOL, made that mistake already. Use your HANDS AND FINGERS ONLY.

From there, the silver pieces actually detach for your painting pleasure, just remove a couple of screws.

As for putting it back... use a good sealant. Personally I used a tube of this black stuff supplied by MBenzNL, i just slopped it on then hand pressed the lens back on until it dried, and over a year now with zero condensation.

Hope this helps. imo body coloured matching may not look good... but flat black might...

Good luck.

Slammer! You're the man! Thanks for the confirmation of somebody actually doing this. Gives me comfort of possibly doing this on my own.

If you can find out, Blake. That'd be cool.

I could always ground my car for a week while the lights are being done...although, I'm contemplating doing it myself (except the painting part).

Hmmm...that's an idea. Bi-x headlights and foglights as possibility?...damn, now that would be insane looking.

Yeah I seen a few of the bay area people w/the color matched both silver and pewter. I think it would look great as long as it's not black. I might do that since I think I need to switch one of my xenon bulbs-burnt out.

enri, if you decide to do it, let me know where you get the chrome piece painted.

I'm a lot more optimistic in trying this now. Thanks for all the replies, everybody!

looking at the lights it looks like that piece would be eay to remove once the front cover is off. since the lense is broken on the passenger light, saturday we can easily remove the lense and see how easy that piece comes out.

From what I've read in the past and from what other people have replied (on this thread), it seems like the removal/disassembly is the easier part...It's the putting back together that I wasn't quite sure would be as easy as the JDM headlights that I've done work to before...But yeah, thanks again for offering your headlights up to check out (even if they're functional, but slightly broken).

I really wanted this to be one of my few "unique" mods that nobody else has, however, my only problem is that I didn't have the time that would need to be dedicated to trying this out. The other problem is that this might cost big money if I try to do it myself (i.e., if I messed up).
Yea, I did just that. I realize that the headlight in the W210 is pretty lousy (even the OEM xenon one, since it's reflector), so I spent sometime to get a pair of after market headlight, couple week to fabricate housing bracket so that it can hold a pair of 2005 Lexus LS430 projector (it's the best of the best out there, super wide & bright), and tune it even a bit more to enhance light & make it look blend in. And the rest is history. If there's a contest for best Mercedes headlight (include the Maybach), I'm sure mine would take the trophy (well, if not, then I steal it, hehehe). My car can beam the 6 lanes freeway w/o problem.

Along the way, I help to do projector xenon retro for lot of fellow in the W210 world, about 30 of them so far

zam2000, this is by far one of the coolest headlight mods I've seen in a while (that looks very clean and great light output).

I got my parents a w210 3 years back. This would be such a good thing for them. Are you gonna be at the Irvine meet? I see that you're in OC, so I'd like to talk to you more about it on Saturday, if you're gonna be there (and of course about the possibilities of the project I had in mind as well).

Thanks for sharing these pics.

That's why I sit back and wait for the Jedi master to appear. By comparison,
I've one retrofitted 2 bixenon HIDs into E320s.

I heard of people doing that to their w210's, but never saw a pic. Do you have any to share by any chance?

lexus lights are truly the best. those suckers light up everything. everytime i pull up next to a lexus, i feel like my hid's r so unsuperior lol.. i mean just looking at ur pics, u can see the light output difference between those headlights as opposed to hid's or even bix's! so for the very unique mod zam2000! would u have any idea how much it would cost to do something like that for a w203 and how much time it would require?

hey drex, i think u've got a great idea! i did something similar to my wrx but u've hit all the right points... messing up a pair of subaru headlights is nothing compared to screwing up the BIX's! talk about a major ouch on your wallet if you mess it up! but i would love to see it if you or anyone manages to accomplish such a thing! the photoshopped image doesn't do it justice and to be honest it looks kinda ricey on the picture, but im sure if it was done properly it would look very nice!

i wish i could goto the irvine meet... i have work... sigh

zam2000,
you're signed up for the huge MB Irvine Meet this Saturday,
but still need to know which car you were bringing...
i have you listed down as

zam2000 - 1998 W210 __?__ or 2004 W211 __?__

In one thread, we narrowed it down that it would be the W210.
Based on the posts in this thread, I think that would be the model of choice, so that everyone can check out your great lighting output and headlamp mods.

Only thing I need to know now, is what model W210 this is.

Please get back to me ASAP, so I can properly annotate the list.
Thanks !

I wish all local people could make it out this meet... it's turning out to be far greater than I expected, and with the raffle prizes, food/drinks, photoshoot, canyon cruise, and vintage/classic MB show, this is going to be an awesome event.

Carlos, Mikey lives up north. That would mean a 4-5 hour drive for him... so not only would he take off work and spend money for that trip, but he'll be losing a paycheck too and he's in school! Gotta cut him a break, man.

sorry didn't know he was so far away....
we do have a couple of people coming down from the BAY AREA...
and the last meet in San Diego, we had people come from Arizona and New Mexico (no kidding ! )

well eventually, people from up north will have to start coming down because one of our 3 annual meets (summer, fall, winter/spring) is going to eventually become Benz-Fest and you can't miss 400-500 MBs in one place !!

ok,
i've hijacked this thread enough....

Doug is bringing his Bi-X to Saturday's meet, and hopefully you guys can work out some ideas and suggestions to help Drex's contemplation become reality !
