When I first saw this red light I was confused what it was for. Its not bright enough to light up the dash or anything. What do you think MB was thinking of for this light?

I though it was so you could enjoy the luxury of the "Laurel wood" after dark, but another list member says it is so other drivers can see when you display your middle finger in New Jersey traffic.

not sure how easy it will be to crack open the mirror. it has that fluid inside for dimming and you dont wanna ruin it. i know the mirror is easy to take down, you pull on it from the base towards the rear of the car and it unclips from the roof. then you need to unplug it from the panel up above.
it might be a fun project. i think blue will look nice in the 05/06 because of the instrument cluster. in pre 05 i say stick with the red/amber/orange whatever color you wanna call it.

If you want more ambient lighting you might want to try putting in an addtional light, instead of changing the blub, I don't know how hard or how you would do it, but If you could, that would be the best answer.

Last night I tried it. If you put your middle finger on the light then the tissues in your finger also lights up.
I suspect that maybe it is for a "day glow" bird.
Those germans think of everything!

what i and everyone else forgot to mention is that this is ONLY with the mirrors with homelink, so that could be a reason why some of you do not have it... correct me if i am wrong someone...

not necessarily ONLY with mirrors with HOMELINK.
This ambient light feature on the rear-view mirror was added in 2004.
HOMELINK had been around for a couple of years before that. It's on my 2003. Adding the 2004 mirror on 2001-2003 is not difficult.
