Looking for illum. door sill pointers for project (pics)

Hello,

In one of my introductory posts, I mentioned I enjoyed doing quite a bit of custom fabrication when my schedule allows. One of the mods I'd like to do to my 06 C230 is the illuminated door sills.

There's one catch...

I want to make my own.

In order to do so, can someone tell me how the ones on the market are lit? My guess is an EL strip? Or is it LED? I see transformers in the pics I've searched for, but haven't seen the underside of one yet. Is there much depth? I haven't removed my stock sills yet.

This is a project I just finished, making a similar illuminated plaque for a 49 Mercury hot rod. This was done by etching a unique material I found with my cnc machine:

A light box was built for the back, and illuminated with 8 blue LEDs:

I've aleady got the various MB files in a vector format, so to do that logo instead of the Merc should be no problem. I'd just like to know more about what I "can't" see.

thanks in advance,

Alan

my factory strips use EL strip i believe. its a thin piece that sits underneath the strip and illiuminates when the door opens. i know for a fact its not LED's.

Thanks. My guess was it was using EL elements for the lighting. That's good, it will give me something to go on, and I've got a source for that which should work.

Guess I need to pop one of my sills off and take some measurements this weekend. The overall install doesn't look too bad, and I'd probably just do the front doors anyway. Unless it turns out really well, then two more would be in order, I suppose.

It's not something I intend to sell, but any image could be engraved into the material, just like the Merc or MB logo. I have thought about doing my company logo instead of the MB logo should I find the time to get in the shop.

Citron, thanks for the tip.
