Rear bumper strip replacement?

So I was waxing my car today...and first find my tire flat. 10.5psi. I found a gash on the sidewall of my tire. How coninidental is it that I find a slashed tire the day I terminated one of my employees for "creating a hostile environment"

After I finish waxing...I go inside to get ready to go to starbucks. When I come out...a gust of wind blew my front gate into the rear bumper strip of my car.

How hard is this to replace on my own? I'm pretty sure I can order this from Steve...and don't really want to take it to the "stealership". Any one done this before?

Thanks,
Eric Y.

take a small flatblade screw driver wrapped in cloth, put it in the crakc between the centre strip and the passegner side strip. it then pops out. peel it out of the groves. the last one notch its in) is kinda tough to get out of.

damn, that sucks! sorry to hear that.

I'm not too sure by the pics, but I assume that the scratch won't be able to be taken out by just buffing it with finishing material... You could try the touchup pen if you don't want to spend that much.

But, it looks like that employee really did deserve to be terminated...

good luck!

I'd be more inclined to take it to a good body shop and have them repaint it. That's probably a cheaper solution than buying a whole new one.

of you want to get that strip repainted - you are 1) beter off taking the strip off the car and 2) you will have to remoce the platsic (chrome looking) strip which is pretty much impossible for people without plenty of patience without braking that plastic...the strip itself costs approx 100USD - new and factory painted...

That strip is secured by one torx 20 screw at the wheel well...you will have to take that strip off starting at the wheel well side...the first 2 clips are difficult to release - after that the rest just pulls out...be glad that it is not a W211 (nearly impossible to take the bumperstrips out on those without damaiging the bumper or the strip).

greetingz,

greetingz,
I stand corrected. Just buy the darn part pre-painted and avoid the hassle!

Something happened to the strip on my left side bumper a while back and the whoever did it, tried to fill in the scratches with black touch up paint! I was so pissed when I saw it, but the thing is by the time I noticed it, I had no clue who would've done it.

It'll probably cost just as much to buy the pre-painted part as to have a body shop take off, re-paint and re-install.

I bet the dealership did it during your last service and tried to patch up their mistake.

You know, I thought that also Blake, but the thing is if it were the dealership, you figure they would use the correct paint color.

I had a feeling it was a body shop I had my carlsson-style spoiler painted at, but then I realized that they had the correct paint also.

It's already been over 1 year since I discovered it, so I just let it go and it's not so horrible that I need to get it fixed. If it was a huge eye-sore, I would definitely have fixed it. Only reason I even noticed it was because I was taking closeup pictures of my car for the first time.

Ahh...I guess I'll just buy the replacement eventually. I used this "Chip Stick" thing which is like a big crayon then waxed over it. It looks a lot better..but if you look closely it's still there.

I got my tire replaced this morning..and they reccomended the two rears be replaced...so there went almost 700 bucks.

Thanks for all the help....

Eric, if the paint stick covered it up good enough, then I'd leave it until later. No use spending the $100 plus on a replacement now, that isn't really necessary.

$700 for the tires? What tires did you get? I can't remember, do you have OEM wheels or did you upgrade to 18/19?

I wonder how it would work in conjunction with the paint-stick that you posted, Phil?...hmmm...maybe a trip to Super autobacs this weekend might be in order. You down to roll out to O.C. tomorrow (of course, after I'm done helping my Uncle and Aunt move)?...LOL.

actually, I'm gonna be in OC (the Block to be exact) early in the morning to meet up with the buyer of those C320 springs I had. but, I gotta get working these papers I have due, so I might go to DTLA...

What/Where is Super Autobacs? I've never heard of it. I wonder if the Chipstick would smooth out the pen.

It's TOYS-R-US for car tuners! That's all I've gotta say. Now granted, it's mostly geared for JDM cars, but they have so many things there that it's still awesome to go look. That's where I bought the bracket for my Euro Trunklid.

I used this Turtle Wax thing...thought I'd give it a try. There's different colors you can buy which blends with the color of your car. It came along with that "Chip Stick" which is just like a huge crayon..the only way I can describe it. The wax istelf is really good. The only downside is that it leaves a blue-ish hue on the headlight/foglights. But that's only noticeable when the lights are on. Hey..for some that might be a good thing..but I don't really like it.

Here's a few revised shots after I used the chip stick...from close up you can still tell it's there but it's not as bad as the first picture I posted. From far away...it's almost invisible.

Drex...as for the tires..I have the Michelin Pilot Sports which came with my car.

Eric, that's freakin' expensive for the stock Pilot Sports!

You're in Hawaii, right? The only thing I can think is that it's based on Tires having to be shipped over seas all the time, therefore the price hike.

Yeah I'm in Hawaii. Each tire was $303.00. Labor was like $50. then of course 4.15% tax. I don't know how this compares to the mainland in terms of tire prices...but I've always known prices to be a little higher here.

Put it this way, when I get my rims, I'm looking to pay around $150 more than your 3 tires for 4 19's (which means more rubber - 235/35R19 and 265/30R19).
