New Snows & Rims

With winter advancing and original tires stating to get thin (36k + miles) I decided to get a winter snow package, got the first snow 2 day later, with 6" of snow predicted to fall tonight.

I'm wondering what you have for the summer?
I had the OEM Continental ContiSportContact 2 Tires on the "Evoulation"sp Rims, I got new rims so I could switch them on & off myself and save the $80+ to take the tires on/off the rims, and also so the Evoulation wouldn't get so beat up in Jersey winters. Plus I think the Winter rims look good and it's nice to have a change.

where'd ya get and how much?
I ordered them from Luke @ Tirerack w/ shipping it was $1300 & change.
I want to get 3 to 4 winters out of them. I put them on Dec 2 and hope to have them off by early March, we'll see.

Thanks for your comments.

Congratulations Jkw! The tires and rims look great! Just be careful when you slow down on the slippery stuff. With the traction you have, you can out brake just about every other vehicle out there, which is typically riding on half worn out no-season tires. It is easy to forget about that since you will be riding with such an awesome feeling of being in control of your vehicle despite the wintry conditions.

Hey JKW.. supposed to have a bit of a snow tonight. Can you test and let me know if you feel a big difference? Would like you feedback on starting on a hill, stopping, cornering, etc in snow. thanks.

Afterhaving tried both the LM-22 and LM-25, I would strongly recommend the LM-25.

Both work very well in the snow. But, in New England, there are many days with dry roads. Under those conditions the LM-25 is a vastly superior tire.

Using the LM-25 I don't spend all winter wishing for spring to enjoy spirited driving.

For 1300 bucks, just get a winter beater.

The winter beater strategy is interesting to me. I live in South Florida. Our car insurance rates are quite high. If I were to get a second car, I would have to pay nearly double my current insurance premium even though I can only drive one car at a time (at least that is what I was told a few years ago). I'd like a small pickup or SUV to haul stuff occasionally. I also think that New Jersey is an expensive car insurance market. Can you in the Northeastern states get a second car without it markedly increasing your insurance cost?

This car is my daily driver ( 84 miles a day), The car has to start, stop, get good milage and provide personal safety, and do it in comfort, I can't do that for $1300.

Insurance is expensive in NJ, but I can get a discount for mulitable vehicles.

In a word the Blizzak are Nice! We didn't get as much snow as was expected, but there was a enough Snow & Ice to play around, A conservative start up was a breeze no tire spin, Braking from 30 was great the ABS was pumping like mad but the tires held, I was able to break the rear wheels free and get a little fish tail going but I had to work hard to do it, just easing up on the gas kicked it right back in line. On the highway the ride is not as smooth and there’s a little more tire hum, but over all I would highly recommend them.

My winter beater is an old cherokee with 200,000 miles on it. Ive had it for many years...during the summer its just used for home depot runs or it sits unused until winter. I was going to retire it, but the newer beater I bought to replace it is actually quite nice, and since I hadn't gotten around to putting a for sale sign on it, I decided the old bugger still has plenty of life in it. ALWAYS starts, stops, and well...I can't brag about mileage...ranges from 16-21...no worse than a V6 powered C-Class. Sure, it won't handle like one, but its 4WD, and I never worry about getting stuck. I park the Benz for winter, suspend the insurance, and the 76 bucks it costs to insure the Jeep are more than offset by the suspended Benz.

If I do get hit, or hit someone, I really don't give a ****. Its a beater. And I don't have to look at all the stone chips, yellowed light plastic, and caked on gunk that winter brings to a new car forced to drive in a sloppy snow, salt and sand covered highway.

1300 bucks will cover the cost of a beater, insurance, and probably a little left for gas and a decent stereo. Finding the right beater is a bit of an art form...
