P0410 cel code on a 2002 c230k

I have searched this topic, and found little info. I know it is a secondary air pump code, and that the supercharger acts as the pump to heat the catylatic converter during start up. I have replaced both o2 sensors (@ 60k miles, I figured they were due for replacement anyways), and checked the hose under the air filter box. I cleared the code, and it comes back after a few starts. Thanks in advance for any help in diagnosing this.

This is a follow up post that may help someone with the same problem. After researching the topic, and basically finding similar responses of 'you need to have special test equipment -take it to the dealer', I diagnosed it in about 2 minutes with no tools at all. I simply removed the hose between the vacuum solenoid, and check valve (the secondary air injection circuit starts just before the throttle body with an appx. 1" hose), started the car and verified that the solenoid was opening for a minute or so, then closing, which it was. Then I attempted to blow through the check valve into the exhaust, and could not. After removing the check valve, I found it clogged with rusty crap. I installed a new check, reset the cel, and haven't had a problem since. Note; the check valve was a pain to remove since it is located between the engine and firewall, threaded (rusted) on and basically part of the exhaust system. I hope this helps.

I honestly don't get it, why would you go through all that trouble, replace O2 sensors at 60K miles when the Emmissions part of your warranty is 8 years or 80,0000 miles. I love working on my car, finding problems, it's a rush but I certainly wouldn't pay to fix my car when MB will fix it free. I think I responded to 3 posts like this in the past few days, nobody believes me, look in your warranty booklet.....

Now if you are talking about that old beetle throwing obd2 codes, that would be cool.

I have a 125k on my 02 coupe and I think thats the problem. There is this werid noise that comes from the exhaust when its in idle. I just made an appt today with the dealer for Thursday although the car is acting really slow. But a few weeks ago I used my friends OBDII and it came up something about the secondary air injection so is this what you had read when you checked your CEL?

I wouldn't worry too much about this code, its only an issue on warm up when air is redirected, once warm this error doesn't matter.

Eddie,
I would suggest taking a copy of this thread, particularly where it says that the check valve is the secondary air injection circuit starts just before the throttle body with an appx. 1" hose,
to a dealership, a good dealership that knows how to find parts.
Give them your VIN # and have them show you the engine schematic for your type of engine. They can blow-up certain portions and pin-point all the parts going from the engine to the exhaust.

Also, see if you can e-mail KAZOOGUY and since he replaced the check valve he must of gotten a part # on the invoice or something.

sorry I can't be of much help.

Carlos

actually this code causes the car to go to a safe mode. AKA greatly reduced power. So driving the car this way sucks.

Kazooguy, thanks for the info. I have a ’99 SLK230 with a 0410 code I found the check valve on mine and want to replace it. Do you happen to know the part number (I assume it’s the same)? Also I noticed the existing clamps are of a specific type requiring a specific tool. Did you use standard hose clamps when replacing the valve?
Thanks, Harry

Parts guy faxed me these schematics with 3 possibilities as to what might be the valve:

Anyone have an idea as to which it is?

Actually, my CEL has been on for nearly a year while I've been trying to identify this valve, and the car runs great (knock wood)

good luck---I've been trying to contact kazooguy for a long time. Please take a look at the sketches MB Parts sent me and see if you can help identify which valve it is.

I don't know which thread to respond to you in.

Here or https://mbworld.org/forums/mercedes-tech-talk/200555-please-help-part-name-number.html

In any case. The pictures that I took for you, (no-no thanks necessary), work like this.

The Denso part I mentioned appears to be #300. The brass looking check valve downstream is #250.

I'm suprised your CEL doesn't throw your fuel tables/power output. It did mine. Sucked major.

Thanks E; I guess I see pretty clearly why cross-posting is frowned upon, but I never got much attention here till I posted the other thread in Tech Talk. I really appreciate the photos and hope to get my mechanic working on this soon (again, I'm no D-I-Yer).
nijmegenguy, I hope you're still out there and will benefit from this info as well. Please share your results too.

allright, maybe I was a tad prat. I was just having my first cup of coffee.

Here is what I would do if you are sourcing the parts.

Get both, give em to your mech. He can do the brass check valve first. After all, that is what the origional poster was saying had clogged, then if needed, you can do the denso valve.

Good luck, and please do let us know what happens.

thanks again; the fax I got from the (dealer) parts guy had the Denso part at $85 and the brass one you identify at $86; I might shop around on the web (at least with the Denso, for which you shhowed the MB part #) to see if those prices are outrageous or not. FWIW, any idea what the other valve, #3 on the parts guy's fax, is?

Couldn't tell you if the prices are in line. Since you have been driving around this long, you might try calling Duval in FL. They generally have the lowest prices.

That #3 part looks to be

Sorry, it is not coming up on the sheets that I have. But, you could email Duval your scanned sheet, and they would surely know.

I think the board needs more tech, so this is a good thing.

Sorry I couldn't get that last number for you.

Buellwinkle, your diagram looks different than the one MB Parts faxed me. Could you provide me the URL you used? I can't seem to find it on the Duval site.
I found the same diagram that MB Parts sent me at the (Russian?) site emrliquidlife had included, above:

They list part numbers, but their part number for #300 is different than the Denso-labelled unit in e's photo. Their P/N's:

Eddieo45 thanks for the inputs. I think I’ll start with check valve #250. I looked at e-bay at the following, I asked the guy if this would work for the SLK230. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Air-C...QQcmdZViewItem

Which looks more like what's under your hood? At Duvals website, find the emissions stuff and click view illustration.

I can tell you that E and I compared under the hood and he had a whole extra set of plumbing I didn't have.
His was mfg. 8/2001 and mine 12.2001
Not sure if any of the items above are those Xtra items had by E.

So, there were changes during the year.

Buellwinkle, my SLK230 arrangement looks like the diagram provided by Eddieo45. Where do I find Duvals website showing the emission stuff? I’m still not sure if I’ll attempt to fix this myself (seems like hard to get to) or hang in there for its 50k mile service (5k miles away) when they are reportedly planning to replace the check valve anyway.
