Quick Question?

I just pick up a new issue of CAR magazine. It's an import magazine from Europe. Anyways i was just looking through the pictures when i came across a C230k. It had 197BHP 207lb-ft and top speed 149MPH.

So why does our car's have 192hp 200lb-ft and a top speed of around 133?? The engines are the same. What is different?

Lightbulb quick answer

Hey Iceman, it's because the U.S. spec has the speed governor. You can get it re-program from the tuner companies.

Quick answer.

One Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) horsepower is equal to 0.986 Society of American Engineers) horsepower. 197 DIN hp equals 194.242 SAE hp. For the new 1.8 liter coupes, 192 DIN hp equals 189 SAE hp.

The Euro cars do not have the electronic speed limiters found in North American cars. The top speed of Euro spec C230k's is aerodynamically limited.

so for the Euro spec coupe putting on a pulley or another HP upgrade raises the top speed also.

It does right up to the point it hits the rev limiter.

They do, at 240 km/h

The C230K is not electronically limited in Europe. The speedlimitation on many cars is 250km/h but the C230K will not reach that.

See below: even the new 1.8L version reaches 240km/h, let alone the more powerful 2.3K:

Sorry, didn't pay attention: 250km/h is the Euro speed limitation, not 240. But with the a pulley upgrade the c coupe is quite capable of doing that ))

I am no expert, but I don´t think a pulley alone would make a coupe go faster than 250km/h

Maybe not. Considering the C320 tops out at 245 km/h with 218 hps and slightly lower cW....

well if it is drag limited, any increase in HP should theoretically increase top speed, but i dont know to what extent it would.

I know that (theoretically) maximum (drag-limited) speed goes up to the cube root of the horsepower.

So, for instance, going from 130 to 150 mph would require (150/130)^3 or about 1.54x as much horsepower (or maybe about 300 hp.)

Assuming you don't get rpm-limited.

yeah I knew there was a formula out there but wasnt sure what it was. Thanks,
So the pulley might not get you a higher top speed but it will get you there faster.

It tops at 240 km/h with 192HP (197 DIN BHP). A pulley adds 25-30HP. I beieve it should be plenty for another 10 km/h.

From what I heard, it should be a square function of the speed ratio.

192 * (250/240)^2 = 208HP.

The cube would give 226HP, which is still feasible.

RPM may be an issue, though, as 250km/h in 6th gear would be in the 5800 RPM area.
