replacing OEM suspension due to wear?

I guess the W203's are at that age (the earlier models at least) where the OEM shocks may start to go due to age.

I'm just wondering if anybody's replaced them yet.. not for the purpose of lowering the car / handling, but just because they NEEDED to.

My 01 C240 (non sport) is at 73,000kms, about 40% of it was driven on the highway, but I'd say 8,000 kms of the city portion was driven over REALLY bad surfaces (up and down Avenue Road in Toronto, if anybody knows....), so I guess mine will be due soon.

The question is, if I were looking to just replace the OEM suspension, would it make sense to get an aftermarket kit? I ask this question on a cost-effectiveness standpoint, maybe slightly for want of a tigher-handling (but not that concerned). This vehicle is used by other members of the family, so I'd rather it not be lower than where an AMG C32 would be sitting. e.g., stay as close to OEM as possible.... I'm not really concerned about how many fingers = wheel gap.

I've flipped through the suspension forum and a couple of the more popular threads, but nobody seems to have brought this up before.

I almost feel bad for asking how to maintain OEM in a modding-environment.. but this car now I no longer have intentions on modding.. just to keep it as a family car.

TIA
