"I can still smell a gas odor coming from underneath the car."

You should not smell gas outside or inside the car. Take it back.

I experienced the same stalling problem, at 80 mph on the highway in moderately heavy traffic. Engine just died. Starter would turn, but no start-up. Tank had 1/2 left. Hot day. No malfunction displayed. After sitting for 1 hour waiting for the tow, it started right up again with no problem. One dealer found no fault indicators and could not diagnose any problems. Home down dealer (larger, more experienced) diagnosed it as a short in the "transmission control module" and replaced that part under warranty. No problems since.

Had the same problem with mine (auto) after coming to a stop and attempting to accelerate. This occurred after about an hour of 75-80 mph driving.

Dealer could not determine source of problem until MB arrived. Ultimate conclusion was to replace transmission contol sensor. No problems since -- about three months ago.

CLK 430 - Magma RED, 1999
CLK 430 with similar stalling

I expereinced the same issue ... waiting on a traffic light in 105 temp. as I started to accelerate all lights on the dash came on and the car just died. About two traffic signal cycles later it came on as if nothing had just happened. Dealer hasn't been able to identify the issue because no codes are generated and it never does this when visiting the DOCTOR!
