DVD player or PS2

For Christmas mom and dad are giving me the choice of a DVD or a PS2 in my car. The DVD would be a Pioneer in dash model and the PS2 would be a external LCD screen. The DVD has an input for the PS2 so I could always hook it up later, but I want to know which one would my fellow MB owners do. I think the ladies would like the DVD better.
Thanks
Tim

No, I DON'T have the command system. I just have a hole underneath the audio controls. I talked to the MB dealer and they said they could do it for 2 hours labor. Not too bad

What model pioneer in-dash DVD player? (Pioneer AVX-P7300DVD? with optional AVM-P8000R and CD-SR90?)

Your MB dealer said they could install it? Would they custom fit the molding for you in the center console (not DIN sized) and integrate it into the sound system and everything?

This sounds like exactly what I want to do! I was looking at an in-dash Kenwood system though...

If you could please pass on any information you think is important, that would be great!

Why get a PS2 when the xbox is the same price and far superior. or for $100 less the game cube. But still, i'd op for the dvd, as it would be kind of hard to drive and play games at the same time. Then again, a gaming system could be pretty good on the 405.

As a person who prefers looking OUT the front of the car while driving, I must admit I have always been at a loss as to the purpose of having a DVD player or Game Console built into my car.

The ONLY use I can imagine is for long drives with kids (having one myself). For long trips with kids, I'd think it would be more practical to buy a portable DVD and/or VHS player w/ LCD. As you can also take it out and use it in waiting rooms, hotel room, airport terminals, airplanes, etc.

I must agree with Flashman.
Or... better yet, buy a laptop with a built-in DVD-drive. This way the kids can:
- watch movies
- play games
- learn C++
- and it's portable

See Garage
Not to be a Scrooge...

In some states, it is illegal to have a "TV set positioned where it is visible to the driver while on." I have seen these units and they are nice, especially in vans/SUVs where the kids in the rear seats can see (but not the driver).

I had an '88 Dodge minivan with a cupholder shelf on the dash I converted to accomodate a 5" BXW portable TV. Try as I might to not watch while driving, there were those inevitable moments when I just had to look...

I understand the new units are factory-set not to play while the vehicle is in gear (if in sight of the driver). On previous posts, there has been discussion about disabling this lock-out provision, if the owner signs a liability waiver. However, you better be insured to the MAX if you run into my *** on the 405 while driving and playing video games (even if it's a front seat passenger playing).

States are gradually outlawing (non hands-free) cell-phone use. Look for this feature to be next on the hit list.

I watch too much TV as it is at home...

Hmm. Aren't we forgetting something here? My neighbor recently hooked up a PS2 in his E320. Doesn't it play DVDs? His did. He took out NBA Live and put in The Matrix DVD. It was nice. Kill 2 birds with one stone... get the PS2

I agree with Black E430. To my knowledge, the PS2 does play DVD's. It makes sense to get that instead of just the DVD player.

there are two differences:

the PS2 will have a separate display - on an arm? while the pioneer will be in-dash.

the ps2 plays games - the pioneer has the navigation system (which i'd rather have). actually, i assuming that timmy's looking at the nav system.

Xbox also plays dvds, and it's a better system. Halo is awesome. Plus, it's got the citroen green color scheme. :p

If it were my money to blow, though, I'd take that money, and put into redoing the suspension, or new tires, or trim pieces, etc. More fun for the amount of time that you're going to use it, especially for the driver.

I agree with MB-BOB's overall view on the general topic, sad to say.

tommy, xbox is a more powerful system. i assume you got the dvd remote to activate the dvd features. but you can't have that installed in a car yet. and you can't play grand theft auto 3 on it yet either (banned in Australia!). i'm still on the sidelines about the xbox and gamecube. heard great things about halo but i'll probably get it for the PC (when it comes out) i'm putting together tomorrow!

Then I guess you have a point Young. A navigation system does make more sense and would be more useful in this case.

Change of opinion ..... I pick DVD player with navigation system.

Good luck with your choice! Either way, it's a win-win situation right? hehehe

IMO I find it difficult to believe

1 that a dealer could do an install in 2 hours

2 That an authorized MB dealer would install aftermarket products in a car that is under warranty or even after warranty for that matter.

Just my 2 cents worth

Yeah i'm gonna go with the PS2. That way a regular car audio center can install it with an external monitor.
