manual transmission fluid

How often should you change the manual transmssion fluid? I have a 05 C230 6spd. Dealer says they use "MB317" gear oil but don't know the weight of this oil.

1. How often should the MTF be changed?
2. Any other alternatives besides MB317 gear oil?
3. Anyone change their MTF yet?

Your Mercedes dealer sells manual transmission fluid. It is part number A 001 989 26 03 10. I don't remember the exact price, but I think it was about $35 per liter (gasp). You will need to buy 2 liters. The bottle is not very specific, but I am told it is a semi-synthetic fluid.

If you wish to use something else, you might want to try Redline, which is a full synthetic. Redline MTL works well in your gearbox, and is probably better quality than the factory fluid. It is about $15 per quart, and you will need to buy 2.

Your transmission holds about 1.5 liters, but a factory technical service bulletin recommends using only 1.2 liters for easier cold weather shifting. No word on how the reduced amount affects the life of your transmission.

Change interval? I always change my transmission and differential oils at 30,000 mile intervals.

You will need two Allen wrenches (hex head), a 14mm and a 17mm, to change the transmission and differential oils.
