I've heard the Alpine 9835 (replaced by 9855) complete with Bass engine pro. It's in my cousin's car and his equipment is scary (ScanSpeak tweeter). The music sounds heaps neater and very tidy (time allignment does wonder), but it just too cold for my liking, doesn't sound natural. I've also listen to Clarion DRX9255 (similar to HX-D1), this unit is just awesome, very transparent, can be anlytical at times, but very2 good. Same as Denon, it doesn't have digital processor. IMO, the alpine cannot match both Denon and Clarion in term of pure sound, but digital proccessor does wonder on staging, which can mean alot to some people or judges .
RF used to join forces with Denon, and create 'Denonford' HU, it's basically a Denon but cheaper price. Eclipse is very nice unit too, especially with 8V. Wouldn't touch Pio unless if it's P9 unit . The newer Kenwood is actually pretty decent (the one with rotating volume knob), forget the series. Happy hunting.

I'm considering to upgrade to Nakamichi when my Denon died out, hopefully not soon . Nak is a very natural sounding HU, Denon has warmth sound to it. It's hard to find Denon nowadays, i bought mine second hand. I'm not sure if there are any US distributor right now, last time it was Red Mountain Audio i believe. I must tell you though, these type HU (Denon, Nak and the older Clarion) sometimes doesn't wanna read burn CD, they will just eject it out. Ebay is a great source for uncommon HU.

Don't worry Belle, I'll take some photos of my install as soon as I get there. My intent is to build a box behind the back seat. Then, build a false floor for the amps.

Jeez, I found a stunner of a HU. A Denon, top shelf, only $1400! I just got a little more depressed. Clarion's top-of-the-line is same price. The problem I am going to have is I will not find a unit that looks good, sounds even better and won't make me take out a second mortgage on my house! Oh well, I am going to take my time.

As promised, pics of the start of my install. Belle, this is for you. I decided to put the subs in the spare tire well, based on the opinion in this thread. So fiberglass it is. Most of the credit goes to my friend, he is fantastic at this type of work and lead the way.
Next, 2 of the amps will be on the back of the back seats and one will go in the corner "cubby" hole. All will be trimmed out so nothing is seen when the trunk is open.
More pics to follow as I finish the sub enclosure. I need to sand it and trim it out. Will keep you all posted!

Make sure that if you do lose the spare tire that you get a tire inflation kit with the repair thing. There should be a pump with this weird tire sealant liquid that's in a can. That way if anything should ever happen, you can still get home safely.

Will do, Belle! I still have more work before the enclosure is done, let alone the whole system. It may take me a while before I hear it, which will kill me but, it will be well worth the wait! Yes, 2 10's. The total volume is around 2.0 c.f. How is your system coming along?
Patrick, you must mean the fix-a-flat stuff. Good call. I was really on the fence whether or not to do away with the spare. That sounds like a good, safe solution. Then, when it comes time to replace the tires, I may look into run-flats. Whaddya think?

Okay, it has been a while since I updated everyone. Belle, W0n6_3d4n, Patrick, Brunelleschi and others, this is for you.....
All power, signal and speaker wires are run, the sub enclosure is almost complete. I still need to mount the grills, lower the subs 1/8" (to keep from hitting the grills) and paint it all black. I have templates made for the amp rack and trim panel (to hide the amps that are on the back of the back seat). The next biggest challenge is to make a side panel to house my 4 channel amp, then wire it all together. Since the demise of my Honda, I have a lot of nice equipment for sale.
Okay, on to the pics! As always, comments and questions are welcome.

Lookin good. Are you going to finish it off in carpet or vinyl? Looks like I’m going to have to get busy on finishing mine up. Keep us updated on the progress.

Thanks Belle! Actually, I flushed in some perforated sheet metal for grills and am going to paint it all flat black. Vinyl probably would look better. I have a little more sanding to do. I should know by tonight 'cause I hope to paint today. If it doesn't look right, I could always wrap it then. There will be more pictures by next week! Still a lot of work to go but, I feel it is coming along nicely.
What plans do you have now? Hard to hide a pair of 12's! Let me know what you are going to do and I'll try to help the best I can.
Oh, Patrick_y, the fix-a-flat can is in place! Now that I am driving her everyday, I felt I should be prepared.
Keep 'em coming...........
