Engine sound and supercharger ?
Hi
Can anyone tell me what speed tfoes the supercharger cuts-in ?
Or is it operational all the time.
This is my first MB and I wondered about the general sound of the engine - like a high pitch purring when I accelerate. I assume this is normal?
I know this sounds a little crazy, but the at gentle acceleration the car sounds like an electric vehicle!! Anyone else sense this?

Noises
The engine is noisy, and the noises are atypical. When starting the engine, some people have said it sounds like a lawnmower. It seems to be the noisiest during the first few minutes after you start it. Some people have a clicking noise also.

Response to "LATENT"
Latent,
I believe the supercharger goes on when you start the engine, but you only feel the effect ( extra acceleration ) at 2500 rpm and above.
I've driven electric cars, but I don't see any similarities. Electric cars are always quiet, the 2.3 is very noisy !

yeah I can usually really begin to feel the SC kick in about 2500rpm, thats when it makes enough boost to feel with my butt dyno. Hopefully with the addition of a pulley the "kick-in" point will be lower on the rpm scale, allowing for not only more hp but quicker acceleration.
On a side note, isnt the throttle actually throttle by wire. If so then couldnt you increase the throttle response electronically? So it is more receptive to pressing the gas pedal?

If you have auto xmission and you step on the gas, all you're doing is sending a signal to the computer ; if the program allows, then you accelerate. That's why sometimes this car is dynamite, and sometimes it's sluggish.

The supercharger is always on, it is directly related to engine rpm, the higher the rpm the more you'll here the supercharger whine.

i dont know much about wastegates. Is this an electronically controlled thing? If it is could a chip cause it to close lower in the rpm band thus making more power lower? or is it a physical component that cant be changed. Even if tweaking the waste gate doesn't offer more peak power couldnt it raise the torque curve and make it flatter, for better acceleration.

While the supercharger is always spinning, the wastegate is open most of the time releasing unused pressure. At full throttle the wastegate closes for maximum boost and the S/C whine will be more pronounced, specially with a pulley kit.

S/C don't have wastegates - turbos have them. Bypass valve is what's used in our Eaton M45. The valve opens to bleed the excessive air pressure back into the intake right past the air filter.
