Has anyone had this problem and had it diagnosed. My 02 2.3 liter kompressor does it if it sits for a week or so. I have low klms ( 19,000 ) I am still under warranty and would like to know what causes this. Is it the timing chain or lifters ????

It might be the kompresor tensioner pulley.

Best Regards.

Tension Pully

If it is the pully that rattles on start up is it a problem to be repaired or is it normal? Second question is, why does it only do it if the car is not driven for a week. Thanks for any info !

The tensioner has to be changed.

In mine it happened after 24 to 48 hours.

Best Regards.

Talking Tensioner

Thanks for the info, I'll try my dealer but in the past some dealers have to hear the noise before they take action, wish me luck.

Hey Tony I just had my '03 in the shop and that is what the problem was. Take it in and have them fix it.

Tony, I have a 2003 C230K mine sounds like that also I have about 45K on it right now.

When I start my car when its cold it make this awful sound like you described but it goes away after a few mins when the engine gets warmer. I brought it to the dealer and they told me its normal. hope this helps.

You still have the Factory waranty let them check it out it's free anyways

good luck!!

My car did this also. I beleive that the problem is a hydraulic cam chain tensioner. The oil drains out of the tensioner when it sits for extended periods of time. Once the tensioner sees oil pressure, and it re-primes itself, the chain stops rattling. MB claims that there is nothing wrong!

So how bad can this be? Mine always starts with a rough"-er" sound and after 10~15 seconds sounds "normal". I thought it was completely normal but now I have my doubts.

mb says it normal, BUT I dont beleive it! Have them put in a new chain tensioner as good faith. Also make sure you take it in and complain about it so that if it does break, you have record that it was brought to their attention early on.

Hi,

I recently had the exact same issue.

Luckily my car was under warranty and got the part (cam chain) replaced.

It is definately not normal and should be fixed.

Anyway, a Benz shouldnt sound like that.

Apparently it is quite expensive to get done out of warranty, so if your still covered I would push to get it done now.
