H&R Springs vs. coilovers.

I want to take an inch and a half out of the suspension and have been told that H&R is the only place that makes the parts to do it right. I have two options. Springs only, or coilovers wich are adjustable and four times as much money. I would adjust them once the job was done, I'd just leave them at 1.5 inches. The springs are obviously preset and permenant. I do not want tires wearing out funny ect.. opinions? I can park another c240 on top of my tires as it sits, need to get rid of a little negative space.

Approx cost? I assume the camber kit makes sure the tires are true on the road, right?

Mercedes is gone physically, but still in my heart.
I have H&R springs, I think they're just fine. They gave me a good drop and weren't too much money. Just make sure you get your wheels aligned and you shouldn't have any problem with overly fast tire wear

Most people who get springs become displease. I rather get the coil overs because you can always readjust later in the future, whether you get bigger wheels or smaller wheels. Just my thought.

yeah, I thought about the flexibility of being able to change, but I realize that I probably would never want it lower than an inch and a half, and the money I save going with the springs is appealing. But why do those that go with the just springs get displeased? maybe there's more to it than just the ability to adjust the heighth. I was told that the coil overs ride stiffer, regardless of their setting. I don't like the sound of that, but I could tollerate it I suppose, if it wasnt too bad.

I think it goes beyond the flexibilty, with Coil Over you have a matching spring and damper. I used to change the spring with eibach and the ride become bouncy. With CO, i found the car more stable and solid, it is stiff but i still can cope.

You're welcome, honestly it's what you really want out of your look. I have 18s, I'd never want 19s because ride discomfort. I used the H&R springs because I don't need my ride "bumpin" and really low. I like keeping it classy, just like one finger space for wheel gap. The springs I have ride just like stock and that's exactly what I wanted, all cars I've ever owned have been lowered with springs and I've never had the desire to have it any lower.

So in the end, it's upto you. If you want to spend four times as much just for the parts so you can rise and lower ride height with a stiffer ride, then do so. But in my opinion, coilovers should be used on the cars they were made for, race cars. So the springs are enough for me, but not for others.

Most are displeased because springs doesn't lower the car as much.

Most people are displeased because the springs leaves the car looking like a grasshopper. People then end up cutting the front springs to even out the drop. Save yourself the hassle and get coilovers.

Trust me bro, I've gone through three suspension setups (Eibach springs only, H&R cup kit, TEIN Basic coilovers) and will never settle for anything less than coilovers. You can adjust the ride height exactly how you want and the springs and shocks are perfectly matched, providing the best performance possible. The TEIN Basics are comfortably stiff, and much le$$ than H&R coils. Best bang for the buck, IMO.

Thanks for the input. I did'nt realize there was another source (TEIN) to check on. C240Style has done what I'm wanting to do with mine as far as look. A new question came up for me earlier today when a friend brought up a point regarding stock shock absorbers riding at a new heigth due to the different spring heigth. BlakeP mentions matched components. Spring&shock. This makes sence. If I do only springs C240Style's ride is good, but do the stock shocks wear out sooner? I dont mean to make a surgery out of this, I mean, just drop the car already right, I dont want increase the maintenence if I can help it. I just wish MB would have refined the ride height a bit better.
Frankw, love those wheels.

TEIN suggested retail on the Basics is $890, but CarLAB has a special group buy going on right now for $825 shipped. See https://mbworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=150495

Do it right or do it twice. What's the point of going cheap when your shocks will go out soon because of the stiffer springs and you'll have to replace them anyway? By the time you're done paying for the springs and shocks, as well as install twice, you could have just bought the coilovers the first time instead of being a cheapa$$. Wise up!

...so the shocks will die early, eh? At 825$ thats only about $280 more than the springs only, of course I forgot about the 4wheel alighn & labor, but still, you make a good point.
