2) with the metal piece, press the grey plastic slide forward, this releases the top section of the smartkey
3) while holding it in the released position, slide the top section up from the bottom
4) once exposed, while holding the (+) side firmly, press down on the (-)side of the battery clip with a jewelers screwdriver to flatten the center (you'll see what I mean when you open it up)
