Power Steering Question
I first noticed this problem when making right hand turns in the rain with ESP off. I would purposely make the rear end come around and then correct very quickly with opposite steering. In this situation 100% of the time the power steering will "lag" and it will be very hard for me to turn the wheel. If I dont have two hands on the wheel I will not have enough force to correct the slide.
I noticed this same problem in the E class today driving around a parking lot. If I move the wheel quickly while stopped the steering will be very hard to turn. I guess some of this is considered normal but there have been circumstances with the E where I am pulling out into traffic and I have to turn very quickly where the steering has "lagged".
I guess what I'm asking is: is this normal behavior? It seems like a very large safety hazard.
The power steering pump in my C class has failed twice I believe maybe I should have the dealership examine the system and make sure it was repaired properly??

I took the car to mb and they said I neded a new power steering rack. The cost of their estimate was 2600.I am out of warranty so I had to pay. Only I did not pay mb to do it .
I boght a remanufactured power steerig rack from mercedessteering.com for 650 and did the install myself. It took me about 4-5 hours. The problem was not gone after that so I was scrued.
I took the car to a shop and the guys over there told me that the ps pomp is gone and I need a new one. They also said that both of the racks that I had were probably good and that mercedes deeler was trying to fool me.
They put on a used ps pomp and it works perfect. The shop charged me 435 for the pomp and labor and 40 for the alignament.
I hope that helps.
