C320 Coupe
ESP, ABS, BOS Not Active...Error messages

Okay...so here is a problem I have....

I bought the car a week ago today. It is a 2003 C320 coupe with 50,000 miles on it. I filled the car up with "my" first tank of gas (after the dealers free one) and when I cranked it up I had 3 error messages....ESP Not Active, ABS Not Active, and BOS Not Active. I turned the car off and on 3 times and it still showed the errors, on the 4th restart all the errors were gone. I called the dealership and talked with my salesman and he said he could be a sensor and since it wasn't under warranty when I bought it that I would be responsible for it! I haven't even had the car a week! This happened on Friday, signed the papers for the car on Monday.....today is Monday (one week since I bought it) and I haven't had the error again....but I am hoping I didn't buy a used car that is going to have problems. This is my second C320 and I absolutely love the car...this is also the first time I have ever bought a used car. I guess I am just looking for some feedback on this situation and if anyone has had similar problems, etc. Thank you soooo much!

I'm not sure if this would fix it, but sometimes after the battery is removed you need to reset the system. turn the car on, turn the steering wheel from right to left, back to right. all the way, make sure it locks. then turn off the car and start it up again. good luck, hope it works for you.

Most times when you buy a used vehicle at a dealer they are responsible to fix it for free for a certain amount of miles/time. In NYS that was 30 days minimum, 90 if the car had less than 60,000 miles if I recall. Check to see what the rules are there but I am betting you have at least 30 days.

it could also be a faulty brake light switch on the pedal which is cheap to fix. If the battery was disconencted, reorient the steering angle sensor by turning the wheel lock to lock a few times.

2006 E55 and 2002 E320
Sunman is right on top of it.

I had the same problem happen before on an E320 in the family. The ESP, BAS, and ASR malfunction errors all came on simaltaneously as I was pulling out of a grocery store parking lot.

Turned the car off, waited 10 minutes, restarted, the errors were gone.

Brought the car into the dealer the next day and they said it was some sort of "brake switch" that had failed, exactly what Sunman said.

C320 Coupe
Thank You!!

Thanks for all the info....

So far I haven't had the problem again, so fingers crossed it was just a fluke and no real problem. I have heard that you can get error messages when you fill up your gas tank, so maybe that is what happened to me. Seems odd that I would get all the brake errors when filling up though.
I am wondering if anyone has had any major problems with their C320, being that this car has 50k miles on it, I am a bit scared now.

Thanks again!!

I have a 2001 c320 sedan. I had the memory seat control module and the rear SAM replaced along with the AC step motors all after the regular 4yr/50k warranty expired. didnt go with the extended warranty at the time of original purchase. may hurt the wallet.

When my alternator was no longer charging, I got the same errors. However, I could also see the dash lights dimming.

Good to see your dealer took care of it.

I assume you shut the car off for fueling but did you competely remove the key. If the key is left in the ignition it can trigger this error or check engine error because the computer reads an open gas cap. However, more likely a brake switch that may or may not happen again.
I always remove the key and pocket it and even lock it if I have to go into the station.
