2003 Sports Coupe Engine
I took a few pics of my 1.8 engine today. I have to admit that the red on the 2.3 looks more stylish than the gray on the 1.8. I thought a few people would like to see the engine bay.

Yeah, I am getting the 2003 1.8 engine too...
But the 2.3 litre engine looks so much better under the hood than the 1.8.
I almost gagged when I saw the difference at the dealership...
But 1.8 it is for me.

get this: I was at the dealer yesterday and he said that the 2002's were a 1.9 engine and the 2003's were a 1.8 litre. I kinda suggested that it was the 2.3 litre in the 2002's. After he went on his "I'm a salesman I know the cars" sales pitch, I walked to my car, got out the official Mercedes-Benz C-Coupe book and showed him that the 2002's had the 2.3 litre. It was too funny.
But yes the 2.3 litre with the red cover is IMO better looking than the 1.8.

Question: I have the new 1.8 engine, but can't see any other differences. Does that make mine a 2002 or a 2003.

There is room. They are both intercooled.

umm.. not to start a Buell type discussion, but take a closer look at the real pic not the cut apart. The hose goes from the intake, across the front of the engine directly into the supercharger.
I know because I looked - not because my salesshmuck told me.

If you look at the second picture, you can see the hose coming out of the supercharger and going to the intercooler.
On my 2002, there is a hose that goes from the intake directly to supercharger too. It has to be that way. The intercooler must be downstream from the supercharger to cool the compressed air.

DOH I guess you are correct, it does have to be on the *** end of the screws. Otherwise what good would it do. I am going to go and stick my head in there tonight to find it!

Definetly not the same w/o the red decorative color, but I'll take the reduced noise and mpg improvement and just not buy the clear hood

i dont care as much about how the engine looks as how it feels- i would certainly be missing the extra punch and the wide torque band that the 2.3 offered, that is what separates an MB from a japanese 4 cyl
glad to have an '02

If you still don't believe, here's a quote from the MBUSA website:

Compression ratio 8.7:1

I bow down before thee... the plumbing is so convoluted in there that I didn't see it. In fact I seriously had to shove my head in the engine bay to find the downpipes and where they go!
Sorry to all concerned.
BTW: will the improved intercoolers fit in that mess down below? or will we 2003 folks be segregated from the 2002's on this one as well?
