2003 Sports Coupe Engine

I took a few pics of my 1.8 engine today. I have to admit that the red on the 2.3 looks more stylish than the gray on the 1.8. I thought a few people would like to see the engine bay.

Yeah, I am getting the 2003 1.8 engine too...

But the 2.3 litre engine looks so much better under the hood than the 1.8.

I almost gagged when I saw the difference at the dealership...

But 1.8 it is for me.

looks like there's quite a bit more space under the hood, compared to a 2.3

It has no 'wow' factor! My 2.3 makes people go 'wow' when they see it! The 1.8 looks like any other engine, too bad...

get this: I was at the dealer yesterday and he said that the 2002's were a 1.9 engine and the 2003's were a 1.8 litre. I kinda suggested that it was the 2.3 litre in the 2002's. After he went on his "I'm a salesman I know the cars" sales pitch, I walked to my car, got out the official Mercedes-Benz C-Coupe book and showed him that the 2002's had the 2.3 litre. It was too funny.

But yes the 2.3 litre with the red cover is IMO better looking than the 1.8.

Definetly not the same w/o the red decorative color, but I'll take the reduced noise and mpg improvement and just not buy the clear hood

Looks easier to work on. Black vs. Red, hell a can of spray paint can fix that.

That's right , he' talking out of his ***.

Question: I have the new 1.8 engine, but can't see any other differences. Does that make mine a 2002 or a 2003.

Not to mention that the 1.8 has no room for an intercooler. Is there one in the 2.3? Any opinions on if this is plum-able in the 1.8?

There is room. They are both intercooled.

He must have been talking to his "know-it-all" salesman again.

umm.. not to start a Buell type discussion, but take a closer look at the real pic not the cut apart. The hose goes from the intake, across the front of the engine directly into the supercharger.

I know because I looked - not because my salesshmuck told me.

And then there is a hose which goes from the supercharger down to the intercooler, and then there is a hose from the intercooler to the throttle body.

If you look at the second picture, you can see the hose coming out of the supercharger and going to the intercooler.

On my 2002, there is a hose that goes from the intake directly to supercharger too. It has to be that way. The intercooler must be downstream from the supercharger to cool the compressed air.

DOH I guess you are correct, it does have to be on the *** end of the screws. Otherwise what good would it do. I am going to go and stick my head in there tonight to find it!

Well said. I have shown the car to 50 people or so and only one asked to check the engine. He is an MB man, but he feel MB has never made an overly attractive engine. I think the only good looking engines are chromed muscle car engines from the late 60's.

i dont care as much about how the engine looks as how it feels- i would certainly be missing the extra punch and the wide torque band that the 2.3 offered, that is what separates an MB from a japanese 4 cyl
glad to have an '02

Right, and then - from the supercharger - it goes to the intercooler, as shown. In this picture the airbox is removed, and that's the part you have described - it screens the rest.

If you still don't believe, here's a quote from the MBUSA website:

Engine and Drivetrain

Engine 1,796-cc intercooled supercharged DOHC 16-valve inline-4 with dual
balance shafts. High-pressure die-cast alloy cylinder block, alloy heads.

Net power 189 hp @ 5,800 rpm

Net torque 192 lb-ft @ 3,500 - 4,000 rpm

Compression ratio 8.7:1

Fuel requirement Premium unleaded gasoline, 91 pump octane.

I bow down before thee... the plumbing is so convoluted in there that I didn't see it. In fact I seriously had to shove my head in the engine bay to find the downpipes and where they go!

Sorry to all concerned.

BTW: will the improved intercoolers fit in that mess down below? or will we 2003 folks be segregated from the 2002's on this one as well?

Improved Intercooler Peet? Are you talking about a MB fix or Mod parts?
