But the 2.3 litre engine looks so much better under the hood than the 1.8.
I almost gagged when I saw the difference at the dealership...
But 1.8 it is for me.

But yes the 2.3 litre with the red cover is IMO better looking than the 1.8.
get this: I was at the dealer yesterday and he said that the 2002's were a 1.9 engine and the 2003's were a 1.8 litre.
Question: I have the new 1.8 engine, but can't see any other differences. Does that make mine a 2002 or a 2003.

Not to mention that the 1.8 has no room for an intercooler. Is there one in the 2.3? Any opinions on if this is plum-able in the 1.8?

I know because I looked - not because my salesshmuck told me.
umm.. not to start a Buell type discussion, but take a closer look at the real pic not the cut apart. The hose goes from the intake, across the front of the engine directly into the supercharger.
If you look at the second picture, you can see the hose coming out of the supercharger and going to the intercooler.
On my 2002, there is a hose that goes from the intake directly to supercharger too. It has to be that way. The intercooler must be downstream from the supercharger to cool the compressed air.
