Angry Chipped Windshield

A @#$%ing truck kicked up a rock and chipped my windshield this morning. My insurance agent said that I am SOL if the windshield needs to be replaced.-- despite the fact that I have the license plate number of the truck. Does that make sense?

I'm an insurance agent. Not sure what state your in, but here in NC Unless the rock came off the truck your on your own. If you were just driving down the road and the dump truck infront of you drops a rock, dirt, tree stump etc, then get his tag number and call police with your cell phone, and follow the guy and let police take care of it. But if he just kicks up a rock thats really no bodies fault. That what comprehensive insurance is for. I think you may want to look for another agent, if he told you that you do not need comprehensive ins. Your car is new, and I assume you make payments on it, then the mortgage company will require you to have collision ins. Adding comp is maybe 50 buck per 6 months, and the deductible can range from $0-$500. What insurance company are you with?

I had mine replaced already. $250 flat fee to me on any windshield replacement to either car, no impact on future insurance rates.

You should have something similar.

Wow - may be a lesson here. Owning one of these jewels w/o comprehensive coverage is a major gamble, especially with the premium costs of everything. No problems with my C yet (knock on wood) but replaced three windshields on various LS over past eight years - last one was in $1000 range! Comp pays for itself pretty quickly that way.

In NC the insurance company can not by law increase you insurance rate becuase of comp claims, as long as you have 2 or less. You get three and the rate goes up, not through the roof, but it will go up.

DOH!

Whoa! I have comprehensive, BUT I live in NJ. So I might as well not have insurance at all. When I said I was on my own, I meant that it would come out of my comprehensive after my $500 (yikes!) deductible.

My insurance company will waive the deductible on a repair (usually about $60), if it can be repaired. But I am not willing to submit it for that small an amount. They say that it won't count against me, but there are always other caveats (ie, number of comp claims, etc.).

Sorry if I misled you guys. I am pretty risk averse, which is a big reason why I bought this car to begin with-- safety features. I would not go without comprehensive (even if my financing allowed).

PS - Hey, pel C, I appreciate your tact when you thought I did not have full coverage. Your comment could have been pretty harsh if put differently. For example, 'what kind of moron drives a new Benz without full coverage!?!' (I hope a rich one...)

Not sure where you are in NJ, but East Windsor Auto Glass (Rt 33, Hightstown) repaired my MG windshield(which cant be purchased to replace) for $25.00. Similarly, a rock kicked up and tagged my windsheild dead center. The impact left a BB sized hole and a chip(chunk?) about the size of a quarter. EWAG repaired it with epoxy.

My bad on the comp coverage. One assumes that every state would have comparable insurance - but I suppose since common sense is involved, state regulators doing the right thing is automatically ruled out.

And I'm a financial advisor - "Tact" (spin??) is my middle name!

I used to have glass coverage on all my cars. I need to check my policy now. But I would assume you could still get it, it had a $50 deductable when I had it.

I've had my windshield chipped twice within the same week. Not too big (less than a quarter) My insurance covered it, but even if they hadn't, it would have only been $50 and came with a warrenty so if it had spread, they would have replaced the windshield for no charge...You can obviously still tell that there was a chip, but it's just two pinholes now compared to two significant chips..

How does it work if getting a new windscreen and you have the rain sensor? I assume you have to take it to Benz and not some other windscreen specialist.

Nope, a windshield place can get the same OE windshield with rain sensor that a dealer can.

Actually, my dealer gave me an estimate of $1500 to get it done, when a specialist charged $650. Same windshield, just no dealer gauging.

yes, they sure did try to rip you but my dealership did it for 730... and the estimate i got from my preferred local shop estimated about the same... so it all depends on dealerships i guess

Just had it repaired. The guy was sorta shifty. He said he would cut the price in half if I paid cash and didn't want a receipt. So I paid $35. Looks good. And since the warranties are worthless-- Safelite's, for example, just credits your $65 towards a new windshield. Big deal.

Well, hopefully the matter is settled. Thanks for all of the input.

There's nothing like a little honest income tax evasion.

I have had 2 chips already in about 11 months. Paid cash for both of them - I knew insurance would cover, but did file. It was $40 per repair - actually the second one was $39.95 - like I was going to ask for 5cents back in change. But, I was thinking, for everyone that pays cash - that does not ask for their 5cents in change - how much do they make off of that 5cents?
