c320 died out while rolling backwards on hill

im a newbie to the MB world so i dont know much about mercedes but i do own a c320. so my problem is today i was driving up a hill and decided i wanted to reverse back down the hill the thing is i left the car in "D" and let it roll down hill. It was only for a couple of feet and all of a sudden my car died out. I put the car back into park and restarted the car and everything was fine. What just happened? Did it damage my engine?

oh boy ... you've REALLY done it now!!!

when in Drive (& no throttle), the only thing keeping you from rolling back is the drag of the Torque Converter. When the weight of your car (mass + gravity) was greater than the force your T/C was putting out (without throttle), the car rolled backwards.

Don't believe that the drag of your T/C is enough to stall your engine, so you might have violated some logic in the electronics that shut down the engine since it's in Drive and shows rollback ... I don't know.

Bottom-line is you engine is thrashed and you should yourself for rolling backwards in drive ...

j/k ... try Neutral or Reverse next time.

Welcome!

welcome to the forum, just remember, automatic "D" meant to be go forward, no backward allowed, doing so you probably risking yourself the transmission, which is a 6000 bucks repair if you are unlucky

Next time don't be lazy and put it in "N" or "R" if you are going backwards

Better yet, turn the car around and floor it going downhill.
