Angry C Class Crash!! :(

Ok just have to make all you guys feel better about your mb... Just recently bought my c240 only about 3 months old and last night rear ended an m class at a pretty high speed (about 35) and he was at a dead stop (guy ran in front of him on a busy street and he had to slam on the brakes, all agree no one was at fault). #1 the m class's only damage was the bumper which was hangin but nothing bad at all... #2 my car was hurt bad, front end smashed hood crumped up, the works, no engine damage and no airbags. 2 others in the car with me, all of us under 19 never having been in a crash.... but i must say we were all amazed.... you look at the front of the car and think damn that hurt, but all any of us felt was nothing more than a slight bump... in fact i didn't even think i hit them untill i looked ahead and heard teleaid come on (which i thought only came on with airbags and seat belts but guess it knew). thankfully non were hurt at all the other couple in the m ended up being are parents for the night and all is good so far, can't wait to see what bev hills auto is going to charge but better than someone hurt. All in all it was good so see how well these cars are built and that the safty is 2nd to non... even the cop and tow truck guy couldn't imagine with the way the car looked that we walked out not even feeling it.
Peace... i'll have pics on here tomorrow when i go to the shop

While I'm sorry to hear about your car, I'm very glad no one was hurt. I'm surprised the airbags didn't go off. Did the seat belt tensioners work?

wow, i'm glad to hear you are all okay. I'm surprised the airbags didnt deploy. It was interesting to hear that all you felt was a slight bump.

it's good to hear everyone's ok, but at 35mph, i'm concerned the airbags didn't deploy, not even with the slower stage deployment. but hey as long as you walked away ok, that doesnt really matter.

Sorry about the car beeing damaged , but glad that you and everybody else involved in the accident are OK .

Thanks for posting your experiences. It's good that MB's have done great in several crash-tests, but it's even better to know that it holds up as good in real life situations.

Thank goodness everyone is ok, take this as an opportunity to learn a little bit about physics and California traffic codes.

If you are following so closely behind someone that you can't stop when they hit the brakes, either you weren't paying (enough) attention or you were following to close. In California, if you hit someone from behind, YOU ARE AT FAULT. Period. Be prepared for a significant change in your insurance rates.

I was thinking the same thing (but a little more nicely! :p ).

Is there such a thing as an insurance claim where no one's at fault? It does seem clear that it's the poster's fault if they hit the back of the other's car, and I can't imagine the other driver not saying that you were at fault. I know that I wouldn't be that much of a sucker. I'd just be happy that they weren't injured, and hopefully won't try to get reimbursed for "medical claims".

I know absolutely nothing about insurance law outside the US, but there are some US states that have "no-fault" insurance. California (where a1phanumrc appears to be located) is NOT one of them.

Insurance companies assign fault by their own rules - except where fault is specifically defined by applicable law. In California, state law is written to clearly assign fault to the guy in back when someone is rear ended.

Physics i know quite well, same with cali traffic code.... but if any of you travel on santa monica blvd rush hour at night you know how dangerous it is and how it's pretty impossible to follow "california basic speed law" which states no matter how far you are behind someone, you are not far enough i do consider myself to be a pretty safe driver (otherwise i wouldn't be in this car at 19) but still a good lesson on how you can get screwed by outside happenings. and as far as insurance our policy is only going up $1000 over the next 3 years.... not that bad IMO this is mainly to do with the cops statement and the other drivers.

You rear end somebody the evening of the 28th and by the morning of the 30th you know how much your insurance rates are going to change over the next three years? How?

We asked aaa to figure with what the claims person had reported... just was a matter of going down the street and getting some number, not exact but close.

In California, insurers usually assign a percentage of fault. For example a carrier can assign an accident as 50% fault. Rear enders are usually 100% the fault of the car with the new nose job unless you can prove some sort of extenuating circumstance like the car backed into you or his tailight/stop lights were working in the dark and any reasonable person would not have seen him. Saying he stopped short unexcpectively and you hit him is like saying please raise my rates.

yeah santa monica blvd is a pain in the wazoo just about any time of the day. especially though from 4-7 on weekdays when everybody is going home from work. then your average speed drops to 1-2 mph.

Am I the only one that finds 'rear ending' someone on Santa Monica Blvd. kind of ironic in a sick sort of way! I hope it was not between Doheny and La Cieniga!

i had an 98 ml320 crashed it once at about 30mph... front was about the same hood, lights, fog bar, fog lights, and a radiator... but i felt nothing, my ex has a c240 2002 and she crashed hers going about 50, she plowed into an jeep right on the side... the airbags deployed and her, her sis, and her brother were fine aside from being really shaken up and some whiplash, and my sister has a 2002 clk she was on the highway stopped b/c of another accident in front of her, and some *sshole with a bronco I hit her around 50 at the rear of the car... made the clk into a hatchback... but her and her three friends felt nothing and were perfectly fine, not even whiplash. Mercedes are definitely one of the safest makes on the road today, i praise them for that. but i just can't get over the fact that i payed $85 for my rear ashtray for my c class. oh well!!! glad everyone's ok.

Wow. Some guys stared at you. Must have been rough.

( I thought 19 y.o. guys were built of tougher stuff )

Seriously - good thing you're OK. Let us know how Bev Hills handles the body work.

As always, it could have been worse, but at least you're okay.
