Can a 'stand up' MB star be fitted?

Anyone know if the 'stand up' MB star is available and can be fitted in place of the the flat badge on the coupe?

Why would you wanna do that? I reckon it would look funny on the coupe...each to his own i guess.

I'm sure you could replace it with the other badge but you would probably need to get that part of the bonnet covered by the flat badge resprayed or something coz the stem coming out of the bonnet on the 'stand-up' badge is much smaller than the surface area covered by the flat badge.

I don't understand why you would want to do that but, then again, I just removed my stand-up star and replaced it with the flat medallion, so we have different esthetics. Nonetheless, it is easily done one way (star to medallion) and I would infer it would be as easy going the other.

The assumption is that the hood is stamped with the recessed hole for the upright star, but is simply covered with the flat badge.

To prove this one way or the other, temporarilly remove the flat badge from underneath the hood (a single bolt with washer), then look on the top of the hood. If there is a recess in the hood of smaller diameter than the flat badge with two notches on opposite sides of the hole, then you can probably install the upright star.

The base of the upright star requires the recess in the hood, so if the recessed hole isn't there, the upright star WON'T fit.

Is that an opinion or a fact? :p

It sounds like fact, with the possible exception that it might be wrong!

I know you were asking for fact as to whether or not it would work, and it may, but IMHO wouldn't the star in the grill and an upright star look weird together?

On my C320, the star requires the depression for its base in order to fit snugly and the 2 notches at Noon and 6 o'clock for 2 tabs. There may be a stand-up star that doesn't require such an accomodation but the stock one on my car does.

Thanks for the tip MR BOB. I will take a look.

Yes, some of you may be surprised at me wanting to change to an upright star, but in my opinion it's no more weird than spending $500 on door sills that glow !!

you're right... they're both very weird...

and that's MB-bob; he has an upright star on his name but not on his car. for those of you interested in an amg flat hood badge, sl55 is selling some (possibly fitting the coupe) in the classifieds forum.

All MB coupes have star grille and flat hood badge. That's their "sport" model signature. If you waht to install an upright star on the hood, it will look funny in combination with another star in the middle of the grille. You don't want to replace it with a starless one, do you?

On this note, last Sunday I saw a Mitsubishi Galant with an upright Mitsubishi badge on the hood shaped just like a MB one... It looked soooo hilarious... A Mitsubishi wanting to be a Benz...

There are a few members here with both star grille and stand-up star on hood. Doesn't "ECorleone" (I think that's the correct spelling) have both on his C240? I remember seeing a pic of someone's benz with the stand-up star, star in grille, and a star front license plate. Way over the top to be sure, but I think its even goofier to have items such as an unpainted carbon-fiber hood and big 'ole wing on the rear deck lid!

Oddly I saw some middle-aged woman driving an E-class (I think it had the sport body kit?) with a star grill and a upright star as well. Possibly, it might be the work of her son, but it was still weird. Or did it come with the sport package?

we are all about change here on this board since MB does not know what they are doing in the design of there cars...

BTW does anyone tried replacing their command system with an in-dash CB or HAM radio ? How about a big whip antenea in place of that dinky little stub above the back window?
