Remember there is only seven infrared keys for a Mercedes an no more. Try not to go through them all. If you do the dealer charges $$$$ to reprogram a Mercedes to seven new keys.
The Best of Mercedes & AMG
Do BOTH keys work from 20 feet?
Do both keys work fine (for ALL functions, trunk etc) when right next to the door and pointed directly at the sensor?
If you answered
No
No
Yes
then the RF section of your CAR is probably out.
Your friendly MB dealer will have to dismantle the headliner and replace a RF amplifier in the area near the rear window.
BTW I don't think the 221 key has any better range, I think the 217 key sometimes simply doesn't work.
I believe it is not as easy as reprogramming the car. I think the ignition switch must be replaced.
They do not replace the ignition switch, they replace the computer controlling the infrared key system. I think it is terrible that the customer cannot control thier own key system without having the dealership dictate the key control. On the other hand, I truly enjoy a Mercedes and I can overlook that small problem. Other auto manuf. have transponders that can be programed by a locksmith with the right equipment.
does anybody owns a coupe that has a trunk release button on their keys? cause i called up two dealership and they say that coupes and wagons only gets the lock and unlock...i rerally want to know cause that will be a good feature to have
I test drove a 2002 coupe that had a 3 button key and a 2003 that had a 2 button key. I don't know why and i didn't think it was a big enough deal to ask. I don't see why they would need a seperate trunk release button as long as it opens...

(Not that I'm complaining, because I have the trunk release and more am and fm stations than I knew existed.)
1) I had keys replaced to newest version, no joy.
2) 1 month later, RF amp replaced in rear (yes it affects the radio too, but that is more difficult to quantify). After amp replaced, system is flawless.
So probably amp and not the keys.
