Is the catapult trunk an option?
Is this normal for your trunk to pop up like a catapult when you open it using the trunk button of your fob? I wonder if I left an egg on the top of the trunk when I pop it how far it would fling it.

hehehe It's so abrupt and violent when it opens that it has scared a few old people who were passing by. I just thought it was a little unusual.

it still does. if it doesn't that means your tension springs are not tighten enough. the design was meant to gain easy access of the trunk with stuff in hand.
it may be a cheap design than the BMW multi link trunk support at least you don't have to put the stuff down and open the trunk.

I have the answer
I used to think that something was up with the speed of the trunklid but I eventually found the reason almost by accident. When I was in Europe I bought the Euro safety triangle that goes mounted on the inside of the trunklid. This triangle has a decent amount of weight to it. When mounted, the trunk lid opens at a slow and progressive speed. There was the solution to the problem. It appears as though MB did not change the spring tension on the trunk lid between the Euro and North American cars. Its all because of the missing weight from the safety triangle.

Geez, Louise... There are several threads here complaining that the trunk doesn't open all the way. Now we have a thread discussing how it opens too fast, or too aggresively.
Proof positive Mercedes-Benz can't please everyone.
You can unfasten the upper sides of the trunk liner, reach in with your hand, and reposition the springs to one of three detent holes per side... toward the rear seat for less tension, toward the taillights for more tension.
As discussed, the amount of weight in the trunklid determines how fast, and fully, the lid opens. I recently adjusted my lid. From the factory, it was set at the middle hole on the left and the forward hole on the right... (huh?) The lid was not opening fully. With both springs in the rear detent, I can now lob water balloons overhead at slow-pokes in front of me. Daddy likes!
As for the simplicity of the design, I prefer that Mercedes overengineer other parts of the car, instead. You know, parts you actually see or care about.

Vectorz, are you ever happy? HA! That is correct about the weight on the lid, I thought the same thing when I first got mine. I would be interested in the "egg" video though! By the way, what kind of car do you have? You have to add it to your thread title. ;o)

This is normal.. I had this on my 2004 C230... it wouldn't alarm as many people as the auto headlights did
I always had people yelling at my from a distance telling me that I left my headlights on..
"Hey, you left your headlights on!"
"No, they're automatic!"
"What?'
"They're automatic!"
"Oh ok..."
