The 2.3 has more torque at a much lower RPM, so it climbs hills with ease at
low rpm and is about 1 second faster to 60.
2002 is the only year coupe with 2.3.
The 2.3 runs at low boost, while the 1.8 runs at max, so it's more expensive to squeeze more power.
Automatic robs about 20-30 HP, so maybe try for a 6 speed.
Put Royal purple oil in it, it'll shift perfect.
Leather is worth it.
In a nutshell, the most popular mods are
1. AMG swaybars direct from the dealer for about $200,
(hella cheap!)
2. AMG crossed drilled and ventilated 4 piston brakes from the C32, about $1K
3. ASP Boost Pulley for about $600 for the 2.3 ONLY, at this point.
There is a kit for the 1.8 from Kleeman but it costs $2k!
4. Springs or Coilovers as well, but their are many choices in many price ranges.
I'm very excited, I'm getting the TEIN SS coilovers ($1500 installed) with 16 way adjustable dampers, after running Vogtland springs ($200 not installed) with stock shocks for nearly 4 years.
So, that'll give you some things to search on, and read up on.
Try to find one with the extended mercedes warranty, and make sure the
old owner fills out the transfer papers with the dealer. That'll give you a 100K mile warranty. Or buy an extended warranty. The Mercedes one cover just about everything! I've made out on it.
Good luck!

In a nutshell, the most popular mods are:
1. AMG swaybars direct from the dealer for about $200,
(hella cheap!) Eibachs will run you an additional $150, and are thicker, ie, better for handling
2. AMG crossed drilled and ventilated 4 piston brakes from the C32, about $1K
If you're modding for cosmetics, fine; otherwise, stick with stock, or at max, ss brake lines - not worth the money for a street car
3. ASP Boost Pulley for about $600 for the 2.3 ONLY, at this point.
There is a kit for the 1.8 from Kleeman but it costs $2k!
Brabus and Renntech also have pullies, but more expensive. I got my Renntech on ebay for $750. No one has had non-installer-error problems with ASP's pulley, but if you're concerned about them not being a known entity, it might be worth the add'l $$
4. Springs or Coilovers as well, but their are many choices in many price ranges. Don't forget matched spring/shock sets as well. Happy medium between springs only (which will kill the shocks) and full coilovers.
If you do get the 2002 ccoupe, try to get one with the C7 package - it's got matching door handles, slightly louder exhaust, better wheels, and a shorter shift linkage on the mannies - it's worth trying to find.

C7, C5, 2.3L engine, and manual transmission. Forget the crappy slaptronic box.

Oh, all of that except for the window trim has been replaced with aftermarket stuff, forgot about them. Thanks for fixing my oversight.

2002 C230 Coupe(M111)
The M111 2.3L Supercharged engine has been around for quite some time. As inline fours go, it was pretty old. Its too bad the 1.8 that replaced it doesn't measure up in terms of power or mod friendliness.
Keep looking, the 2.3 is the one you want. I went on a 500 mile business trip earlier this week, we took my car- got 33 mpg averaging 73miles per hour. Not bad for ~230 supercharged horsepower.
