Quick question about sunroof?

How exactly does a sedan know the difference between auto close and close as long as I hold?
There, logically, seems like there ought to be a detent.
As far as I don't want one without safety.... how do we know that the safety nor the auto close is not there?!
I read somewhere that the 02 coupe sensor for closing window blockage was at the top (in gasket?). I tested my 03 and it is now a voltage resistance measure. Just put your hand over the closed window sill and while it is going up push down on the glass... voila it retracts.
Anyhow, I for one don't need the safety of the closer - but would LOVE a one touch close. It isn't a matter of laziness... just efficiency... I love driving with all windows open - must be the motorcycles I gave up when I got married.
.. in the morning I am running out of my car, feet in starting blocks before I put it in park - trying to catch my train.

Never use your middle finger (the logical option in my opinion) to open the panoramic roof if there is another car behind you.

Also, I may have been misquoted (by C230Jeff) in a subsequent post to my earlier reply. There IS a detent in the sedan sunroof switch in the "close" position. Push to the detent = manual close, push beyond the detent (what I called "second click") = one-touch close. Just like the switches for the side windows.

Let's say you are a 5'1" woman and you are being attacked. Having the windows automatically retract when your assailant pushes a hand into the car would not be cool. Nuff said on that. It was actually explained in detail in the BMW owner manual - so I cant say RTFM on this

I'm really starting to think a sedan switch will work in the coupe to get the auto-close feature. I saw a demo of the Star-Diag. tool at a show and it was able to turn on/off all the features of the car like wipers, lights, windows, etc (in this case an ML). This means all the switches do is send commands to the computer. It's the computer's job to decide what to do from there. This leads me to believe that the infrastructure is there for the auto close, we just need a switch to send the command to the computer. Or not???

All I did was pull down the overhead console to take a peek at it's workings. I then realized that the switch is an integral part of the entire housing. This probably means the entire housing from a sedan would need to be swapped. I don't know if the sedan's console is even similar to the coupes.

I had a sedan loaner for a couple days when they replaced my steering wheel, sunroof blinds and did my A service. The panel seemed to be idendical except for the SOS/TeleAid button. To me it really looked like it would be a straight swap, which is why I bumped the topic today...

I'll add to the bump - someone has to have access to both cars at once! Anyone work at a dealership and can try this? I would be rushing to whip out my credit card and buy the new console!! Need the closing. I open my roof daily and it'd be nice to hit and forget on closing.

Times like these make me wish I had a digital camera. It would be so easy to take some pix of the sedan's overhead console and internal wiring to help out. Maybe for Christmas...
Peet, MarkL explained it, but think of the dual position switch in the sedan as just like the lane change feature on the turn signal. Hold "on" the detent to manually control the turn signals... push pass the detent to select the automatic "set and forget" function. The sedan sunroof switch works the same way.
BTW, This thread is starting to remind me of the "compass in the ashtray" thread a few months ago. In a fun way, of course!

I'm afraid pictures are of no use in this case. Behind that pretty plastic housing is...surprise...a black box. Not a alot to see there except the cute little fan that wafts air across a sensor for a temp reading. The magic either happens inside or through software.
Bob, what you CAN do is pop off your housing (as if you were going to change the dome light bulb..RTFM
) and write down the part number of the entire housing. Then WebGuyNJ will purchase the part and, at great risk to life and limb, swap it into his coupe.

If anything - please post the sedan part number so we can compare and see if it is the same item to begin with. Otherwise, I'll buy one and try it myself! With a part# it may make life easier.
