Hitting it up with an A4. . .Lag in 2nd-3rd gear
So tonight my buddy and I exited century city mall and i said lets see what are cars are made of...his car is a 1.8t chipped (his chip wasnt on..just got the news today)...and my car is a regular c-class with 19's....(now i dont know if the rims make the ride heavier or whatnot but they are 2 inches bigger than the stock...anyways)...we started pushing it at a turn (i had my car in sport mode where you shift yourself)...he kinda got a little head start...i noticed when i was pushing it in 2nd while it was switching to 3rd there was a lag from the gears switching...my foot was still on the pedal and the throttle wasnt working...but anyways...i ended up taking him...my friend in his CL 55 AMG was Recording the whole thing from his camera phone...We have a video and some after math pics......I belive he will post them in a bit he is a newbie...
my question is that why is there that lag how do i fix it...is it fixable or is it normal?...i have looked around on this site and have found a quite a few ineresting material on this subject but this have not came to a specific conclusion...has any1 ran into this problem and cured it for its disease?.

That is very normal. I found the best car for 'manual mode' in an Automatic, is BMW's w/ SMG (like the M3, M5, M6). However, even that has some problems. The fact is, in order to make sure the driver is not an idiot (and believe me I've seen some idiot drivers who are clueless -- take one guy who up-shifted to try and over take a car), so they make the transmissions 'dummy-proof' so you don't spoil your engine. In turn, this means the car has to 'calculate' what you're trying to do before it commits to the gear change, which results in a time drag.
Last weekend I had a BMW Loaner, 328i - brand new, and I trying it out to see if there was any improvements for the 2007 models and no, there's not. When you shift, it takes about 2 seconds before the car actual shifts. Sometimes the car never even shifted, but that's another issue altogether.
Anyway, if this is what you're talking about then that's quite normal with all Automatics that offer 'manual' mode.
Ahhhh... I just love the 3 pedals... shift whenever!

as for your wheels, depending on what kind you have (you most likely have the cheap replica 19's by your sig) then you're adding a significant amount of weight and you'll definitely be slower than with the stocker 17's.
you have the 7-Gtronic tranny which is horrible and that's why you have the lag.
tee_tz, SMG is not an auto. it has all the interals of the normal 6-speed except that it has an electrohydraulic clutch that can shift in 80milliseconds--I doubt most people can shift that fast even at their best. even in drivelogic mode which is closest to an auto, you can feel that it's not an auto. SMG isn't close to being as refined as an auto. how many times have you heard of having to ease off of the throttle to get a smooth upshift on an auto? there's no lag with SMG. if you want it to double clutch on a downshift, stab at the throttle right before you shift and it'll put you in the optimum rpm, but with no lag. if there is a lag, it's not even close to the one found on the 7-Gtronic or the Steptronic.
as for Steptronic, I think its superior to the damn 7-Gtronic, I hated the loaner C230's I got with 7-Gtronic.

Please update your profile and/or your signature to indicate what specific w203 you have because I doubt people want to continue guessing anytime you post a new thread like this.
I'm assuming, based on nlpamg's answer, that you have a 2006/2007 C230. A "regular" c class does nothing for the description of the exact model you have.
As for you taking your buddy in a "chipped" 1.8t? Where did he have it tuned at? The 1.8t Audi, if tuned properly, can blow your car out of the water (and for that matter, many of the C classes w/ exception to the C32's / C55's). That being said, are you sure your friend knows how to drive his car?...LOL.

I know this seems strange but after a while of driving with SMG you will notice 1st to 2nd gear change is fast but 2 to 3rd is not as fast but 3rd to 4th at redline is the fastest and smoothest change you can have.
As for shifting speed, yes its possible to shift as fast and faster than SMG the only thing is doing that over and over again is hard. I can probably shift as fast as SMG in a manual car but only on the 1 to 2nd and 3rd to 4th gear change.
But as for your C class lag. You can never fully turn ESP off. So it was probably cutting the power.

I had an E46 M3 for the weekend, I found it best to leave it in auto mode and just keep an eye on the speedo! In full manual mode I couldnt help myself, I just kept on revving the car out through the gears just to listen the engine note!
If only the C200 changed gears as quick hey, but not really apples to apples auto vs manual. I have driven a few AMG's but never in Manual mode. Do they change gears faster? I wonder if it is possible to fit shift kits to M.B.'s
