C240 Charcoal Retrofit

I've searched the forum, and I've found a couple topics that touch this subject. I have a 2001 c240, with no active charcoal button. My question is, what exactly does that button do? does it change the airflow, to flow through the filter going out, or does it change the airflow to flow through the filter comming into the hvac system? I noticed that my car has a styrofoam box where the filter should be.

Is the active charcoal system, basically a new plastic piece under the passenger glovebox that can house a filter? Or is there more to it?

Where's sunman, I know he knows about this, he was on the other threads that i found when searching... see i searched
