Grinding Starter

It's a rare occasion but sometimes when i go to start the car, it just grinds, just like when you try to start a car when it's already running. I'd have to take the key out of the iginition and try a couple times before it starts correctly. Sometimes it will grind for about 1 second and then do nothing. I'm guessing the starter is going? Anyone know how much they go for?

Hmm, this seems like a solenoid issue. The solenoid may not be engaging properly. So, the ring that pushes into your flywheel is not in the right place/ fully engaged. That means you are just lipping the flywheel with the starter's gear. How bad would you say the grinding noise is? You definetly don't want to screw up your flywheel.

It's pretty loud. The best way to describe it is comparing it to the sound when you try to start a running car. It does sound like the gear is not in the right place though.

Are you going to be able to do the work yourself? If you don't attend to it quickly, you'll find that you eventaully have a starter that just spins and won't start the car at all.

If you can get to it with a wrench you may want to see if somehow the starter has just loosened its bolt and is pulled away from its mount. Then you would tighten it up and viola be done. But logic tells me that is likely not the case.

The other thing I don't know is if MB sells just the solenoid, or if it all comes together.

I'll have to take a look at it today. The car is approaching 90k mi so i'm thinking its just going. It began leaking about a drop of oil a day recently, so i'll have to do a check under the hood anyway.

sound like a solenoid not working properly. I doubt the bolts holding the whole starter got lose, you'd hear some knoking sounds while driving.
Some dirt got inside the solenoid assembly or another possibbility bad contact, check the wires on the starter.

We are both thinking the same thing. But I don't think it is a outside wiring issue as much as a magnetic one. The engagement isn't properly working. Makes me thing the magnetics/actuation is worn and not pusshing the starter's ring gear in. Hey, the Bolts, I knew shot in the dark.

I'm sure wear is a factor. It's just that it's very rare, probably one in 30 starts.

Anything is possible. The only way to find out is jump under the car. I would hate doing it in this kind of weather
