won't be driving my car until early January

Hi,

I won't be driving my car until early January when I return from my businese trip.

Should I get my sister to start the car just to run the engine once in a month ?

or

It is ok just to leave it there until I return in January ?

Better have her start it up and drive around the block a couple of times a week. Also, starting it up and shutting it down without driving is not very good for the engine, so insist on her making a few laps.

I live in Vancouver, I can take your C230K when you are away... I will drive it couple laps in the autocross every week.... lol

You can always disconnect the battery, if your sister don't want to drive it around for you.

Driving it around the block a couple of times or driving it a couple of miles doesn' t cut it. If the car is to be driven, it should be brought to full operating temperature. If it isn't brought up to the proper temp, it is better to leave it parked.

The temp gauge shows around 80 C after 2 miles, at least in mine, which is fine.
Lynn, care to elaborate why the car has to be brought to FULL operating temperature? What exactly are we talking about?

You can get water condensation in the exhaust and with petroleum lubricants acids can form, I don't kow if that is true with synthetics. But, the lube in the trans and diff are petroleum based. While water temp can come up to normal in a couple of miles, it takes at least twice as long to get the oil and trans and diff lube to temp.

Actually I am on my business trip already and I just found out that my sister doesn't have my keys. So, I guess she can't even start or drive the car.

What kind of problems will I encounter now that I have to leave the car sitting in the garage until I am back in January ?

In winter in Canada it may take a little longer than that to warm up tranny and rear diff to the "room" temperature. Water condensation shouldn't be a big concern in winter, as reaction speeds drop with ambient temperatures. If you warm up the above mentioned parts enough, you will prompt both subsequent water condensation and chemical activity, which doesn't make sense.

Driving a car every now and then helps counter formation of long polymer chains in petrol-based lubricants (which results in deposits and blobs), prevent oxidation of internal parts, and keep seals from drying out.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

I left my car in Pacifica (Bay Area...damm foggy) in a garage for about 2.5 mths without starting nor disconnecting it...but when i come back..it is still fine!....so, i presume nothing will goes wrong, unless the weather plays such a great part...
