That's what my service advisor told me. Mine are squeaking right now, but I asked him and he said don't worry about it, the car will tell you when it's time.

Yup, but its up to you determine if its front or rear.

Also i've been told that our rotors are soft. So if you let them go until the light goes on im guessing you will have to replace both. breaks/rotor. And its going to be the fronts that need to be replaced. Im guessing you wlll replace the front 2 or 3 times before you replace the back.

usually, you have to replace rear every 2 times you replaced the front.
and yes, once the brake wear shows up, it's time to change it.
I just changed front front and rear today, even though I still have about 20% left in the rear.
but oh well, since I bought the rotors and pads for all 4, might as well just change it.
don't wanna waste time to take my car to shop again in few month for the brakes

Im at 31k right now and expecting that warning any day now, my first time for the front was at like 16k, this time Im doing all four, probably due for an oil change too.

I have driven the car until the warning comes on. Didn't have to change the rotors. Also beware of dealers. They will always tell that they are worn and ask if you want them changed. Thats why I always wait til the sensor goes off. Brake sensors are cheap.

So when i go to replace my fronts, should i wait on replacing my rotors also?? There are groves in the rotor but there not that bad. How would i know if i need to replace the rotors or not?? Thanks for your help.

Those rotors are grooved like crazy. No warning yet. Guess I will wait until the wife says something about a message. If the pads and rotors have to be replaced, might as well go until 'the computer' says its time...I've got 77,000 on my Titan and brakes are good to go. Just a little concerned about the early miles and brakes looking bad. Thanks for the responses! Mike

This is for those of you that want to check if you need rotors. If you take either the front or rear wheel off, you will get better access to the rotors. Take a rag that you don't mind getting dirty and wiping off the brake dust around the hat of the rotor just behind where it sits behind the wheel. The outer edge should show you the part numbers and the Minimum Thickness specs. They will be different from front to rear and if you live in a cold environment where they salt the roads or your rotors are somewhat rusty, you may may have difficulty finding these numbers. We are told to quote you guys rotors if they are at 0.5mm above these specs eventhough most of the ones we see are well below the specs. To check this you will need some metric dial calipers that will reach over the lips/edges of the rotors where they are not worn away and sometimes may get sharp enough to even cut yourself on.

hope this helps

Just did a full brake job (front and rear) on the Mrs commute car last weekend and the front rotors were also gouged like hell... about 2mm deep.

NO warning indicator in the dash, just squealing... ticker is coming around 82K, 2nd front brake job and 1st rear brake job.

Heres what the front/left brake rotor looks like; see image below.

If the rotor's edge was sticking that far out, I would have definitely replaced them.

If you do not replace them, the next time it tells you to change your brakes, you will still have about 50% of your brake pads left since that edge will cut into your brake sensors and give off a false warning to replace your pads.

The rotors may seem fine to you, but If they get too thin I have seen them come apart or even start getting warped which will give you a nice vibration in your brake pedal every time you hit the brakes.

^^^ Amen to that Racin_fool...

My problem was... it's the Mrs daily commute car and she'd never tell me ***** 'til the very last minute. I'm just glad that's been addressed and the task was fairly easy

Thanks for the better pic of the rotor.
It looks ok except for the ridge at the edge. It doesn't look gouged at all. As long as the contact area is above the minimum thicknes, they should be fine. If the rotors are thick enough, just have them machined to get rid of the ridge and smooth them out more. Then again, rotors are not really that expensive on the after market, so you'd need to weigh the cost difference.
