I like the way the newer BMW shifters sit tucked down low in the boot (kind of like your approach). I just could not get the stock plastic ring to snap up onto the Schatz prongs to get the boot to lock up against the bottom of the shift knob. So I ended up using the domed trim ring and "sandwiching" the top of the leather boot. 6 one way, half dozen the other I say.
