Steering problem

Hey guys,

When making a turn the steering makes a "clunk" sound and is also felt through the stearing wheel and gas pedal...

I felt it once a few days ago and like 5 times today. Anyone have any ideas as to what this maybe?

Thanks
Nick

I have a similar problem on my other car...What happens is that whenever I turn the wheel to half of farthest I can go (either left or right)...it will make a clunk that sounds painful...this was after my father curbed the car to avoid an accident...he curbed it so bad it blew his tire and messed up the alignment...we got a replacement tire along with alignment and balancing...afterwards...this clunk was still there...i'm sure some nuts, rod, or something in that category is broken or loose...might wanna check on that before flushing steering fluid...if you recently hit your front against something...it would make sense for this clunk

I have never curbed to wheel or been in an accident.

I am going to take a look at all the components tonight and make sure everything is tight. I might do a flush just for ****s and giggles, since I already have the fluid.

Nope. It's gotten a little worse. I dropped the car off a few hours ago.

I cant figure it out, the problem happens intermittently and used to happen after driving the car for a while, but now its doing when its cold as well.

My suspension is shot but I don't think that it would make the noise since it doesn't make it when going over bumps. I checked to make sure everything is buttoned up nicely under the car and couldnt find anything loose.

I will know tomorrow if it is something stupid like a worn bushing or if I am going to be bending over taking it up you know where form the dealer.

Mine usually does it after driving for a while and the car is all warmed up. Which makes me want to think that it has something to do with the power steering fluid. But I checked that and its fine. I have no clue at this point.

Dealership has no idea what the problem is. They cant replicate the sound and everything looks good under the car.

My SA wants me to take a drive with one of the techs.

I swear this always happens to me. I have a problem that is getting progressively worst and as soon as I take it in it goes away.

sounds like a ball joint or a tie rod end problem to me .. never had it on my benz but i had it on other cars in the past you can check both by lifting the car up so the wheel is in the air . hold the top and bottom of the wheel and jerk in and out ( so push the top in and pull the bottom out then reverse) if you notice any play then your ball joint is gone...do the same side to side (with someone holding the steering wheel steady) again any play will indicate a worn tie rod end

yep... that was the second thing I did.. there was very very very little play. Which makes me want to think that its something else. But I will mention it to the tech guy tomorrow.

Just got back form my drive with the tech.. He is almost positive that the problem is with the bearings in the strut assembly.

This means I now have an excuse to upgrade the suspension.

There is a 10% chance that the problem is with the u joint in the steering.

i guess you can replace the tie rod ends while you're at it too, its a 2 minute job if the suspension is appart and then you'll only have to allign it once

My guess would be that it's your SPRINTBOOSTER! It is probably touching the steering column.

Don't forget the pesky thrust arm bushings. Check my tie rods warn post for the list of items Mercedes knows are a problem. They just like to sell parts and service.

Nah, it was his improperly installed sprint booster. You gotta shove all that slack cable towards the passenger side.

I think wraping it around the brake is better. I just used zip ties, zip tie everything.
