Seriously though, thanks again guys for the info on such a simple thing to add a couple more miles to the gallon, love this forum.

Oh yeah...my highway mileage went from about 22 to 25.XX...some huge increases here...great time taking my friend around town, specially during Spring Break since gas is looking up for me.

Gas dropped...a tad....but $3.65/gallon still burns holes in wallet and pocket.
that's nice
I am gonna try W mode for next tank and see what I get

OLD: 2004 C230 Sport Sedan, NEW: 2007 SLK350
There's a long discussion on this in the SLK section:
https://mbworld.org/forums/slk-class-r171/186557-question-sport-comfort-switching.html

One of my posts that describes the S-C-M switch:

The SLK55 has 3 modes on that button: Sport, Comfort and Manual.

I have the SLK350 with the 7-speed automatic. My button only has 2 modes: Sport and Comfort.

To get to Manual, I have to nudge the shift lever to the left or right to choose a gear limit (1 through 7)

Towards the end, the general consensus for switching between modes:
Put the car in Park or at least stop the car when switching modes. Switching while in motion is not recommended.

I also use W-mode in a trafficjam, so it won't shift op and down between first
and second gear every few meters.

Since we were somewhat on topic of gas mileage...I wanted to ask you all...I have the '03 C230 (just to clarify because I don't know if they altered the menu's of the newer C230s)...and when you go to the menu on your dashboard to check your MPG...there are 2 menus...one that says "...MPG Since Start..." and another that says "MPH since Reset..."....can anybody tell me the difference between the two? I can reset both menus...so wouldn't one cancel out the other? I have no idea what is the "MPG Since Start" menu is about...but the "MPG since Reset" menu is clear to me.

MPG since start is when the car has been sitting for a while, the information returns to 0

MPG since reset is from when you last reset the information. That only changes when you hold down the reset button to 0 out the details (much like the overall mileage screen).

We're all the same generic pinoy anyway :p. Yo bro, I've noticed recently that I've done a few modifications with the intercooler rubber encasing - I think this second time around my IC gets more air, especially with the B front.

Gonna attempt running in C mode for this gas tank to see if it makes a difference on my car's gas mileage (since it's not exactly stock anymore). I'll report my findings when this tank is done.

The processor on the transmission waits for a "motion clear" (ouput shaft stopped) before entering the other mode. Some versions also check that the shift lever is in park.

No prob! I figured it was somethin' like that. I blame it on the damn Cali weather right now. It's so up and down that it has everybody messed up

Moviela, didn't know about S not having hill-holder mode. Now I gotta find a hill to try this out. Been driving this car in W mode 99% of the time since I bought the car, and hill holder is awesome. 1st gear in this car is pretty much useless unless you like driving the car like you just stole it.

imo it would have been nicer if they changed the different gear ratio so that the 1st gear acted more like 2nd gear and just got rid of the button (I'm talking 5-speed auto here), then you'd really save some gas on the highway, especially when cruising. One does not need 2500rpm at 100km/h unless he/she is always passing people, 2000rpm is more like it. Anyone selling a differential with a lower gear ratio? :p

Yes, for MY2002-2003 the switch says Winter/Summer and for 2004+ it says Comfort/Sport.

You can switch modes when driving, though it only makes a difference if you are driving very slowly. Try rolling very slowly (ie under 10km/h) and start pushing the button. You can feel feel the car switch between 1st and 2nd. I do that red lights when I'm bored.

They probably changed the W/S to C/S because many people might have thought that they could only use W mode in the winter or they might damage the car or something. I did try using C today and I got better mileage, but I also was driving more calmly than I usually do. I will have to try this later again.

Lets see...I put mine (2003 C240) in W mode for my ride to and from work, which is not far, however, I really like how it feels compared to S mode. My question is...I'm a maniac and drive fast sometimes...is W mode good for speeding/highway driving? I also do a lot of city driving...back and forth to work/school and sometimes Boston. Which is best for me do you think? I've been following the thread, and in all honesty, I'm not clear of everything thats been mentioned..I'll be driving a bit more tomorrow, and I'm gonna leave it in W mode...

Yes, you can drive highway+ speeds in W(C) mode.
If your car is an auto-tranny, it probably won't downshift as soon as it would in S mode for a given gas pedal deflection; which is part of the nature of W(C) at any speed.

Ok thanks....well recently, while driving in S mode, I've noticed that it seems to be downshifting rather soon, and feels kinds jerky, I dunno, it just started being a little different...And yes, in W mode, the car rolls longer and sort of faster, for instance driving on a regular, say 30-35mph road without your foot on the gas...in S mode, if I take my foot off the gas, it downshifts by itself sort of quick...am I feeling things or does this sound logical?

No I think your perceptions are accurate. I prefer the C mode for most driving since the trans definately does not jerk as much. However, like you sometimes I like to drive fast, but our car is not that fast to begin with. The S mode seriously helps it and it has much more thrust when you put it in S.

I think the S mode programming has it downshift sooner, or more proactively - depending on the conditions.
If I'm coasting to a stop going slightly uphill, in S mode it will downshift to keep the car in - or closer to - a more appropriate gear for acceleration from that point. Doing this uses a little more fuel, but it's also more ready to go. The same scenario in W(C), and it doesn't downshift nearly as soon - unless you then aggressively press the gas pedal.
