Can your friend return the kit? There are a few kits like Carlab, MTEC and Siemens that doesn't require you to set the car to xenon.

I don't know if the prolumen kit will throw obc error or not, but I do know that it shouldn't throw one on bimmers, not sure about mercedes.

yeuchau, thanks for the link. I forwarded it to my friend and he installed it by himself. Surprisingly, the HID kits work......... but with one caveat. The bulbs flicker about 10-15 minutes after he switches the lights on. Is this normal? or is it because of not having xenon=present? Thank u.

The lights should not flicker. The color will change a lot during the first 10-15 seconds when you turn the lights on as the bulbs warm up. If the lights are flickering, it means he most likely needs the xenon=present setting changed.

Does his dash show a check headlight error message? If it does, then he definately needs the xenon=present setting done. When the error message comes up, the correct voltage/wattage does not get sent through the headlight wires, hence causing the flickering.

no error message on the dashboard. First time he turns the lights on, they flickers for 10-15 seconds, then they're fine. He turns off the lights and back on again, this time takes only 8 seconds to be steady.

I did a quick search on the forum regarding to the flickering thing.
There are some possibilities:
1. xenon=pressent
2. add resistor/capacitor? (I don't know which one since I don't have expertise in electrical stuff)
3. bad ballast/ignitor/kit?

Since there was no error message, is it safe to ignore the item #1?

i've also heard some people had this problem only when car is cold

so maybe try it again when the car is warm up and see if it still flickers

good luck

Actually the 35 watt consumption is better, it releaves power which could be used by other devices like audio amps, mega ray guns, and super neutron blasters. Seriously, it wouldnt be a problem. In regards to the compatibilty of the kit, there are only a hand full of kits that are true C-Class plug n play... (Carlabs, MTECH etc..) My recommendation is go ahead and have the car programmed for XENON=Present, it will save you the hassle when buying inexpensive HID kits.

Nope, its better to go for a better (and sometimes more expensive) kit than to get an inexpensive/crap kit. Siemens is by far the best brand for after market HID kit that you can get for Mercedes. Their failure rate is the lowest in the industry and it does not set off the xenon error message. When I got my Siemens kit it was priced lower than those of Carlabs/MTECs.

I by far do not encourage or endorse cheap products. Some pockets arent as deep as others, so I recommended that if he did buy the FleaBay kit, get the car programmed for Xenon=present.

Yea I know what you mean, sometimes people look at price more than the quality.

which do you guys think would match best w/ piaa 6600k? (TERA'S)

i mean it would make sense that by number it would be 6500k tera's, the fact that they are made by the same manufacture.

When i think about the 6600k, this is the output i expect to see:

<courtesy of north 44 c55>

Now MJ50 said that theirs no purple, but in those pictures i see purple.
This makes it difficult for me to match up kelvins by photo.

and when i picture the 6500k it looks like this:

<courtesy of cntlaw>

So yeah maybe the 5500k would go ok, what do you guys think?

hey, i just got a used phillips hid to mess around with, and after i installed everything and turn on the car, the headlight just flickered for half a second and died, and then 3-4 seconds later the headlight would flicker again then die, in a cycle. i didn't expect it to work, but is this normal, the flickering on, then off for a few seconds, then a flicker again and off? i mean, it is a phillips brand kit, 4300k. if i get the xenon-present option changed will it work? or is the bulb/ballast bad and need to be replaced? these are used. please help me guys, i'm so frustrated.

this is exactly what our car did. Once we had it changed to xenon present it was fine.
