i was riding with my boss in his S-500 yesterday. as we backed out of a driveway, we suddenly heard a scraping noise- the right rear tire had hit into the cobblestone that ran along the edges of the driveway. he shrugged it off, pulling forward again and then backing the rest of the way out. Being he has 20" wheels, there isnt much rubber on the sidewall to prevent the rim from being scraped. He has scratches all over the edges of the rims.
Tonight i was parking at my girlfriends house when guess what? my left front rim scrapes against the curb as i am backing up AARGGGHHHHHHHH it left a decent shred mark about 2 1/2 inches long on the very lip of the C7 wheel. Ironic huh?
oh well its better then a dent. just had to vent to you guys, your the ones who really care about this stuff anyway
(not like my girlfriend does
)
anybody know how much it might cost to get it smoothed back out?
thanks

Well, I could tell you how much it costs here in Australia...about 60 - 90 Australian dollars which is about 32 - 50 USD. That inlcudes the rotation, refinishing and maybe add 10 -15 bucks for alignment. The guys who do it here are specialists in rim repairs. Fortunately I haven't needed to use them yet...touch wood!
I wouldn't think prices in the US would deviate from this too much, unless they are trying to make a huge profit.
Come to think of it, it was rather hard at first to reverse park the coupe because the back fender sticks out farther than the wheel. I bet a few people have scratched the rim on the first day of getting the car.

i've fixed several scratched/dented wheels of mine, there's a place down here that specializes in that sort of thing, they are the best. I've seen them work wonders... i've used them about 10 times betweeen 3 sets of wheels, they are great, and the price depends on the way the rims are constucted, my wheeels now have a machined edge, which costs me about <$40 to repair the edge... just re machining... good luck!!!

I've seen a wheel guy do a C7 wheel before, and he wasn't able to match the shine that the wheel has. I am sure there are better people who can do this, but be careful. If they just have a silver paint, it will match, but it won't have the shine that they usually have.

Monday, I was making a right turn from a narrow two lane street into a very narrow driveway. Due to an on-coming car, I had to start the turn more to the right than normal. The curb end there is cubical in shape (very sharp corners) and just higher than the sidewalls of the tire. I just barely got the right rear wheel onto one of the corners.
A quarter inch to the left and I would have missed it and a quarter inch to the right I would have shredded the sidwall of the tire. Either would have been preferrable to what happened. I now have wheel with a chunk about one and a half inches long and a quarter inch wide missing from the rim, and a huge chip in the paint. I don't think is is repairable. The tire is perfect, not the tiniest mark on it.
