Cup holder chipping

I just came back from the local Starbucks with a Grande Cafe Mocha, I put it in my cup holder like I usually do. When I got back home and remove the mocha from the cup holder, this is what I found. The chrome ring section of the cup holder is chipping and it's exposing the white plastic inside. It's not a big deal but just never expected this to happen. Has anyone else experienced this?

Photo is taken from my camera phone, so please excuse the poor quality photo.

Actually yes! Just recently... In fact it should be in at the dealer any day now, covered under my warranty.

Too bad I'm out of warrenty, I wonder why it was chipped? Bad quality or my drink was too hot? I had the cardboard sleeves on the cup though... I had no idea when it had started chipping, I just noticed it today. Plus the drink wasn't even that hot.

I think just poor quality, I rarely use the cupholder for actual cups, too much of a pain to shift... I use it to store my XM remote and my cell phone (and recipts that I forget to throw out). I can imagine if you use it for sweating cups, the moisture can ruin it.

I have a small chip on mine too. Keep us updated if they swap it out under warranty.

Well, it's an MB interior; be glad that it's something that's probably fairly easy/cheap to replace. Chromed plastic will always do that when subjected to repeated use.

I know what you mean when you say it gets in the way. I actually use the cup holder in the extened postion (when you push the button to reveal the second cup holder) I use the extened cup holder and it isnt in the way anymore. Then again I have an auto but I like to manually shift at times, well its mostly to down shift to get my power going.

Mine was chipped before I took delivery of my car. Amazingly my salesperson saw it and told them to replace it before I even said anything. I guess he learned how annoying and picky I can be.

a slow C
will be covered

Some dealer will fix it under warranty but some don't.... Mine was chipping too then the service advisor told me to rip out the cup holder so they will replace it.... My car is 2006 so I pretty dissappointed with the cup holder quality

my car has that problem also.. but i do use the cup holder alot for cups. i think it comes from putting in and pulling out the cup as it grabs the chrome part of the cup holder and after time it will just come off. But i didnt know that they will replace it at the stealership. Going this weekend!! yay!

I have a pre-facelift cupholder, the only chrome part is the OPEN button, and yes, it has cracked twice. I'm thinking of just painting it instead instead of getting it replaced again under warranty, since the cupholder is not really broken broken.

Mine was replaced under warranty. I was wondering if I had contributed to the flaking, so I asked my plating shop their opinion. They say the usual cause is not using the specified base plastic for the decorative chrome to hang onto.
