In a car you feel and hear the bass go up due to the pressure diference with the windows open. We would sometimes see a 2-3Db increase with an SPL meter when opening the windows on competition cars. The pressure in a car with the windows closed is pretty stable, it can not change as quickly due to the sealed environment. With a window open the pressure can change much faster. As well as alowing the woofer to travel quicker due to the lack of the sealed car holding it back so to speak. I actually blew 2 10's one day because some moron opened the rear door of the car as I was tuning the amp, and I overdrove the woofers just a tad. I had not had a change to turn the gain down yet. I was in the process. But as the back door opened it allowed those poor woofers to travel to the fullest and they seazed in there fully extended positions as the voice coil welder itself to the magnet.

Yes, you can certainly overdrive a space, whether it be a room or car's intereior. I suspect, in a situation like that in the quote above, either the car's cabin is acting like part of a large bandpass enclosure when the windows are opened(see pic for diagram example), or the ratio of moving surface area of the drivers to too great for the volume of the interior of the vehicle. This brings up the theory of planning/tuning a system for the best sound where the vehicle will usually be closed or open. Hmm?

Ussually you do it closed since in an IASCA comp they would do the SPL with the windows closed. And yes it does act as a bandpass enclosure when you open the window. Since you are changing the amount of air in front of the woofer it adds to the SPL by a few db. It has been a while since I have built and installed systems though. But sadly I am not buying the C230 for its sound system and I do not need a booming system anymore. I can have boom at home with my home audio if I want to listen to deep loud bass. The car is a mode of transport and as I get older I do not listen to loud booming music anymore. I just like good *** fill. The funny thing is that when I test drove the coupe I did not even turn the radio on. If I do not like it I will add my own system later. But I am getting the Bose, so I am sure it will fulfill my audio needs.

Where did u tap the line to get it to the amP?

Is it really hard to run a line back from the HU to hook up a sub and amp in the trunk?

I think the sound is great but the bass just muds out the rest if its loud.

All i want is a dedicated sub!

Thanks
i dont know much about how it was hooked up becuase i had a stero shop do it. All i know is that its hooked up to the car battery, and the back of the HU, I also needed a high low converter since i was using the stock HU. And i dont know where exactly all the wires are to the trunk but i dont see one. they did a good job. and it sounds great. it made the whole system sound better, and to me the stock speakers sound GREAT with the sub. Its hard to say how good it sounds but i have been in my friends car with over $4,000 of stero equipment and i think mine sounds better. i am very impressed.

Thanks BlackC230Coupe!

Didnt want the post to turn into a flaming war against what a real system is.

Hey its your car, if I want a subwoofer for some more bass so be it.

I personally dont listen to my stereo super loud, just that the bass distorts the rest of the sound when its up high.

So I figure if i get a sub, I can lower the bass down on the standard speakers so they dont get mudded out.

Thats all.

Thanks everyone!

Hey don't get me wrong, I did not listen to the Stereo yet. I will buy the car no matter what the Stereo sounds like as I can add to it later if need be. I am happy to see that adding an amp is relatively painless, because that is what I will most likely do to retain the wheel controls. So best of luck in adding the amp and sub.

I dont think its appropriate to just invade my thread with you and whoever else's flames.

At least he didnt cuss you off, only 2 words.

I know its tempting, but its hard as hell to get answeres to our questions when everyone starts flaming each other.

Lets try to get along!

Did you figure out what you wanted to do yet. Personally I would add an amp and a small sub. Maybe even a bazooka if you want to save space, or a bazooka type woofer, one with an amp all built in. Here is a link to what a guy did with his Bose system. Only diference would be getting your signal from the speaker wire behind the deck.

You really don't want to mess with the wires in the doors. Believe his advice. There are plenty of threads to show you how to remove your HU and tap in the wires back there. They will feed to the doors anyhow. And you can also search for threads on here in regards to the door panels. Trust him on that. Session has posted a very good thread with pics on removing the trim to get to the HU.

Good advice. I know somebody is going to say that opinions are like A******* and ex's. Everybody got one. OOPS. I guess I just did.

Take what you read on here and form your own opinion. We should be all adults and not children.
It all depends on what type of bass you want; jazz/classical type or rock/pop type.
Pick and choose; then compare to what your friends system sound like and then make your choice.
All advice is good advice. It stimulates the brain.

That was not my intention. The discussion in threads often goes off on tangents. That's the nature of the beast. In this case, the "tangent" was referring to the benefits to adding a subwoofer or lack thereof, which isn't too far off-subject. Do you know how often threads are started by someone asking "how" to do something, only for further discussion into the pros and cons of doing it causes the person to re-evaluate the whole idea? Very often! Anyway, I can "get along" with people in a mature manner while respectfully disagreeing with their opinion. It's called debate and shouldn't be confused with "flaming". I only posted that hateful e-mail I received in this thread because of its direct relevence to this thread. Good luck with your stereo upgrade
