There is nothing to damage, the filter is easy to change. You can suck the fluid out first or drain from the plug. The filter and new seal is not that expensive. And if you look there are bolts with spacers so overtightning is a problem. The CD says to only give it about 8 NM, which means with a 1/4 drive ratchet use just two fingures and dont over do it. After I put the car up on ramps it took 15 minutes to do. You will get alot better results in performance if the transmission can draw fluid through a clean filter. And there is a 1 1/2 inch square magnet stuck to the bottom of the pan that you can tell if you have any big problems. Just pull it up look at it for any big chunks and clean it, put it back in the same place. The Porsche has a bad filter in it, and it's a Mercedes transmission, so I have the same thing to do on Monday. I can do picture of that one since it almost looks the same. Same case and all. It's just mounted in the rear of the car and directly to the rear end.

Guess I'm just a bit paranoid about dropping the pan on my own (even though I have been trying to make the transition from bringing the car to a ind. mechanic to doing things on my own).

The torque on the pan bolts is 8 NM and the drain plug is 20 NM. There are some specs listed for a shell fluid, it goes by what transmission you have so I would have to know the number for your transmission and then you could try to find the fluid for less then the dealer. I don't know how common it would be??
Hey Russell Stevens, I am just wondering...what exactly is Mercedes EPC? And are those part numbers for a 2003 C230?

EPC= Electronic Parts Catalog
https://epc.startekinfo.com/epc/coverage.jsp

3 bucks a month or I think 20 a year for the subscription.
Well worth it.
Too bad the tech site isn't that cheap.

(Just revisiting the tranny issue as I think they overfilled mine...
it won't shift when it's cold...and I'm talking 80 degree F ambient not
COLD like other places. A sign of overfilling and I been putting this off for a while. Got my laser themometer, dipstick, replacement seals, and
brake bleeder with smaller aquarium hose attached....E's idea)

Doesn't have one. You have the 7G-tronic, aka 722.9 transmission.

Here is a link to a great document that goes over how the 722.9 was engineered and how it works: http://www.mercedestechstore.com/pdf...9%20062504.pdf

You put my name in there like it is a bad idea and that if someone uses a brake bleeder and aquarium hose that it is my fault.

These trannys are very finiky about fluid level. VERY. Just 100+ccs of fluid made a big differance in my shifting. I'll assume that everyone knows how to undo bolts and can put the filter back in etc. I would however say that not everyone is going to take the right amount of time to get the fluid level precise.

Somewhere I have DIY pics for the M111 version tranny

?? No it was an excellent idea. Worked great. I don't see anything that would lead to that conclusion. What fault would there be? We're talking about leveling the fluid level. It's all good my man!

Back to the subject at hand....

I see on the WIS maint sheet that it IS a maint. item. Nothing about
a "lifetime" fill. I just noticed it. So, is it the dealers who are perpetuating this myth? I see a 60-90K kilometer maint item to flush and fill. Which is like 35K-60K miles max!

here's the link for that.

http://mercedesshop.com/Wikka/Trans7226Fluid

Chrysler uses this tranny too.
I wonder if they would have the fluid for less?
Mine is black, though it was changed only <20K miles ago.
