2000 MAZDA PROTEGE
AMG Coupe -- Diesel
Enjoy.
Mercedes-Benz C30 CDI AMG
t's not only V8-engined supersaloons which have attracted the attentions of Mercedes' specialist tuning arm. The C30 CDI Sports Coupé, which Auto Express has exclusively driven here, has also benefited from a series of improvements.
This is the first ever oil-burner to come from AMG, and it's a cracker. With 231bhp and 535Nm of torque, the 0-60mph dash is completed in a hot hatch-scalding 6.9 seconds. Top speed of this BMW 3-Series Compact rival is 153mph; yet tread lightly, and a near 40mpg average is on the cards.
On twisty country roads, the 3.0-litre engine's torque creates a recipe for amazing low and mid-range go. But the biggest surprise came at the test track, where the impressive power output means the Sports Coupé feels more like a V8-engined muscle car than a sporty diesel hatch.
Creating a sweet-handling machine such as this was not just a case of slotting in a new oil-burning unit and stiffening the suspension, though. AMG has reworked 95 per cent of the five-cylinder 20-valve 270 CDI motor. A longer stroke, larger turbo and a high-efficiency air- water intercooler system help to raise the output from 170bhp to 231bhp.
Even though this amazing motor will be used in the C-Class Saloon, Estate and Sports Coupé AMG, Mercedes says current potential sales are not sufficient to warrant right-hand-drive versions. More's the pity, as the C30 CDI AMG proves you can combine serious performance with good fuel economy. Ian Kuah

Wow, with all that torque I wonder which transmission they are using. If it is the stock 6speed it means that we can mod the hell out of our cars and not worry about melting the gearbox! If that is so, using the clutch from this baby would be a great idea as it must be really heavy duty too. Just a thought...

Does anyone know someone that has actually had their stock engine modified by AMG? Does AMG do aftermarket engine modifications? Would probably cost a fortune!
