please, people, give me an answer and let this issue/thread die...ive searched and asked my dealer and canot find out:
Does the 2001 C240 have a resonator???? or is it just a muffler?
the way I understand it, it goes -
engine>>>header (if you can call it that)>>>cat>>>muffler
is there a resonator between the cat and muffler????
if so, can I take it off?
the dealer said that no there wasnt a res, but they werent sure, and the shop i just dropped it at said there was, but if you take it off you get error messages...will SOMEONE pleaseeeee clarify this stuff for me?
to sum up:
2001 C240 (non-sport)
resonator separate from mufflr or not?
removable without error msgs?

Mine is a 2001 CLK55, but I don't see why the exhaust setup would be too much different.
Exhaust manifold -->> 2 seperate pipes -->> 2 seperate Cats -->> 2 inlet into 1 'resonator' -->> 1 pipe from there on back to 1 muffler -->> dual outlet to 2 tips.
Yours probably only has on tip and possibly 'y's down into only 1 pipe with 1 cat immediatlely after the exhaust manifolds. I hope this helps.
P.S. I had the resonator completley removed and am happy with the sound. Still quiet, but gives a little throatier response when opened up. Might have gained a little more throttle response too, but that might be in my head.
Remember, mine is a V8, so I worry that if not done right, the smaller engines could easily 'rice' out.

well, I have the eisenmann muffler on it, and i was wondering if there was still something between the cat and the muffler, like a resonator.
is the thing about the error msgs complete BS?

the V6 headers, into 2 pipes, into 2 cats, into one cat, into a resonator, into a extension pipe, into a rear silencer.

the resonator is in the middle of the car. the canister before the muffler and aft the cat.
taking it out does not trigger any error. it does exactly what it is named;to resonate the noise out.

C240wner, whats your bias? well, w/e
what should something like this cost? to take it out and replace with a straight pipe?

I haven't taken mine out yet -- I'm not sure if I want my car to sound thaaat loud. I mean, I want to hear the exhaust, but I don't want my the people at the other end of the phone with my neighbors to hear me every time I come home. And I know it doesn't sound like those Honda Civics with an exhaust pipe the size of a balloon, but I'm not sure it sounds like something "not after market".

i had a resonator delete on my C320.
Sounds a little deeper but NOT louder. Sound is perfect.
When I installed C32 AMG exhaust, that's when they deleted the resonator.
Total cost: $100 at one of SoCal's premier muffler shops: ED HANSON'S.

So you did a resonator delete with OEM exhaust, then installed the AMG C32 exhaust at a later point? If so, how much louder or deeper was the exhaust with the C32 muffler?

So with resonator removed and with AMG C32 exhaust, the car sounds deeper but not much louder. I personally love the sound it makes. I'm sure the resonator removal alone is the reason. There's not much just a new muffler and dual tips will do for sound alone.
