Maybe, just maybe the computer in the car has a fail safe in the transmission so people cannot easly destroy the transmission. Now that is just a thought. I cannot understand any one who is in any clear mind try to destroy a transmission just for the joy of spending $$$$ to buy a new one.

Get that stupid thought out of your head. Just because people implied that it was my intetion to do so, it was not. Doing what I did one time, for a few minutes, won't do jack to the car.

I'm going to have to look around in the manual again, but I seem to remember somewhere it said that the car won't shift out of neutral until the RPMs drop to a reasonable level so that the car won't lunge unexpectedly...apparently this is a pretty low rpm, that might explain the whole thing. I'll check it out.

Many years ago, a friend of mine did what you attempted to do. He attempted it just once, because in doing it he broke the rear universal joint. He and another friend then had the wonderful experience of pushing the car home and explaining to his dad what they had just done to his dad's car. I was sooooo happy I wasn't with them that night.

Anyway, the point is, often once is too much.

Remember General George Armstrong Custer who went into battle? He just just made one mistake also, it really did not cost him anything did it?????

Okay, I found the thread. It's good enough for a laugh, sorry 02Impressor.

And hopefully it will keep anyone else from trying this.

C230 Sport Coup + 2006 W164 ML350 + 99 Ford Escort (What the heck, it gets 38 mpg!)
Obviously MBZ was prepared for just this kind of problem and planned for it with Das Gut Deutcha Engineering.

Geez 11 pages on this?

Go in Reverse, gas up until 20 mph, then quickly change to Drive and floor the gas pedal.... He has a fast Maxima and this is how he burns out.

This is what happend;

As soon as I switched to Drive (w/o braking, just switched from R to D), the car kept going in reverse anyway! Even if I gas'd up it would just go faster in Reverse until I came to a complete stop, then there would be a jerk and the car would be in D mode. Why did this happen? I did this with ESP off & ESP on, W mode & S mode. Someone explain.
If you'd rtfm, you'd know that your transmission will never allow you to do that. Even Mercedes never counted on someone wanting to pull a stunt as stupid as that. However, they did count on people in the snowbelt areas attempting something vaugely similar...in order to free themselves from a snow bank or muddy condition. Basically you can't...you'd have to call for a tow, or good samaritan to push/pull you out...rtfm, and you go alot further in appreciating your machine...

btw, why would consider something as foolish as that? Because your friend can, in a fwd MAXIMA?

Holy ****.. i cant belieive you actually did that to your car.... you are crazy my friend! Luck your tranny didn't come apart! probably a safety feature as to why the car wont just get back into D..

I did a N to D drop at 5k rpm on my 91 190E 2.6.. and the tranny shredded to pieces.. I was 16.. learned my lesson after working all that summer to pay for the repairs.

you're an idiot.

no wonder you couldnt peel out - you weren't on a steep enough hill.

Here is what you do:

First, find the steepest hill you can.

Second, make sure is dry NOT wet. If its wet the tires wont grip.

Third, punch it in reverse - watch behind you, you want to be safe to other drivers.

Fourth, when you top out at the rev limiter - let bounce a few time (for effect of course) drop it in "D" and punch the hell out of it.

That should get you where you need to be. . ..

I am not trying to be a smarta** or anything, but did you pay for this car yourself? I would never do this to any of my cars. I paid for them, and I take care of them. That is crazy. I guess you could do this in an old worthless piece of junk if you wanted to, but a MB is not a chevette...

EDIT: ick, it erased my post.

What I was basically trying to say was: Let this thread go, and use your common sense. It's your car, do whatever you want with it, but be prepared to live with the consequences of your actions.
