Royal Purple makes SAE 5W20, SAE 5W30, SAE 5W40, SAE 10W30, SAE 10W40, SAE 15W40, SAE 20W50.

MB recommends Mobil 1 0W40 Euro Formula. 5W40 is probably the closest oil to the recommended 0W40, however I personally wouldn't recommend using the Purple Royal. What's wrong with Mobil 1?

I know that Royal Purple is a GREAT synthetic oil. I have used it in Honda's that I have owned in the past. The only reason I have reservations on using it in my C Class is that MB engines are much different than your average car. If you do buy RP, I would recommend the 5W40.

The owner's manual recommends 0W40 Mobil 1 European Formula. I personally wouldn't even risk normal 0W40 Mobil 1. The European Formula is different than the Mobil 1 for the US.

Incorrect. C230's use 5.5-6 qts. C240's and C320's need 8.5 qts.

There are other oils on MB's approved oil list other than 0W40 weight. The 0W40 is recommended for the average US climate. I noticed that you are in BC, Canada. Your climate is a bit colder than "normal", so the dealer probably is using a different weight oil that is better for the colder conditions where you live.

well i went to the dealer a while go to ask about changing the oil and they told me they use Penxoil 15w40 which is "mercedes recommended for my car" and that they only use Mobil1 0w40 for AMG cars. well i asked in europe and mobil one is recommeneded for ALL newer mercedes cars, so i guess the dealership is trying to save money. ended up buying the Mobil10w40 and changed it myself. Use Mobil10w40 supersyn, if its good enough for AMG cars its definetley good enough for ours.

Pennzoil?!! I think your dealer may have been smoking that stuff. They recomment Mobil 1 for all of their engines, AMG or not.

2005 C Wagon (No snickering please!)
Only Mobil 1 0W-40 that says it meets Mercedes Sheet 229.5 on the container is the only oil you should put in a gas powered C class. It has an additive package that is different than other Mobil 1 synthetics. Mobil has dropped the "European Formula" moniker from the bottle.

Some bottles say Mobil 1 is used by Mercedes and a few other marques. Don't assume that means it can be used in current W203 cars. Look for Sheet 229.5 on he rear label. There are some other brands now listed, but none of the new brands are certified for AMG.

Here is a list for NAFTA vehicles, with thanks to the gentleman who maintains it:

I was wondering, is MB recommending the same type of oil across all regions? I mean, there will be different weather conditions in Greece and eg Canada... They will still recommend the 0-40 type?

Just a thought..

I find it hard to believe that thicker oil is recommended for a colder climate.
15w40 in a Canadian winter? While im not expert with merc engines yet, I'd be surprised if an average car would start!

Go with a 0w40. the 0w means it will be thin at startup temperature, giving better flow and protection before it heats up. It will act normally like a 40 weight at operating temperature.

You need to look in your owners manual, as it would have told you everything you need to know. Actually it's a booklet, called MBZ approved lubricant or fluids or something as that in the little black binder.

Geez, I think this was just covered....another thread on oil.
C'mon people.
