So one of my friends gets a cobalt SS, and the first thing that comes out of his mouth after he told me about his acquisition, was that his car was faster, better, and could out handle my mercedes. He actually went out of his way to pull into the gas station and downplay my car right in front of one of his new friends. Maybe he was showing off, but he really came off like a *******. I did say that I would never buy anything else besides a mercedes after owning one, maybe that is what started this rivalry between GM and Mercedes Benz.
My question, is.......
Is our Mercedes-Benz vehicles that presitigious that others must go out of their way to pounce on any opportunity to demolish the prestige? The car isn't even in the same class, mine is a 4 door, his is a coupe that weighs half as much. Of course if you supercharge the lighter, smaller, car, it will handle and outperform the bigger, heavier, Naturually aspirated vehicle. I think my friend is just jealous, and has to say those things to make him feel better about wasting his money on american junk IMO.
I'm actually kind of hurt that my friend would act like that towards me. I never brag about my car, say its better, so on and so forth. If you ask me something about it, I will tell you what I know. ESP is usually the topic of conversation.
When you get a mercedes, you find out who your real friends are.

I hate when people ask me what kind of car I drive or something....I think it sounds stupid if I say "Oh, I drive a mercedes" or "I drive a benz"....so I just say try to play it off by saying my car is just silver or sumtin...but then they still ask you what kind...so...I don't know, lol, I just feel like I brag just by answering the question, but that's not how I am, you know?
Kind of on topic of what you're saying...but anyways just try to get him to understand that the cars are completely different...tell him he's acting immaturely..

ppl at my work think my car cost 45-50k, i never brag about my car, but they jus assume im a snob or got hella money cause of the car i drive and how its fixed up.

He's clearly not your friend. A friend would not degrade you in front of others. You can do better than have someone in your life that does nothing but compete and disparage you.
As for the Cobalt, it is what it is. Certainly it's quick, but it's an economy car that is not even that well regarded. I would take a used Dodge Neon SRT4 over a Cobalt personally - there's more potential in the SRT4. But the question that comes to mind is: What is the metric by which the "better" car is measured? 0-60 times? Cachet/panache? Safety?
Blunt honest truth: 0-60 times and 1/4 mile times, the Cobalt wins. For everything else, the Mercedes is a superior vehicle.
As for the Cobalt, it is what it is. Certainly it's quick, but it's an economy car that is not even that well regarded. You're totally right, he's naive to think that just because his car can outrun yours that its better. Look at this car: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaWoo82zNUA it weighs next to nothing and has a 300hp engine, allowing it to track faster than a Honda racing bike.
There are a whole lot of cars out there that can go faster than ours. Obviously your intention in buying the car wasn’t to be the fastest on the road or you would have gone with a C55.

and those Cobalts sound like vacuum cleaners....a kid at my school just got a brand new Cobalt SS and he floors it everywhere he goes...the first time I heard it pass by I turned to my friend and asked him "since when does Hoover Vacuums make cars?" What's ironic to me is the reason I like my car so much(sporty good looks) is sometimes the same reason I don't and that is the car appears to look real fast,but in reality it isn't the case.
For what it's worth,I was going to buy a brand new 06' GT Mustang before buying my Kompressor,but the MB just ooozzed style and sophistication over the Ford.So bottom line is I sacrificed power for style. imho

his colbalt SS probably can outperform a C240 Luxury Sedan. But I can guarentee his SS performing (in power wise and handeling) than a sorta "modded" C320 Coupe. with AMG sway bars+ that is.

No offence to anyone, mercedes does have a reputation but some people do ridicule it just like some Merc owners over here ridicule Japanese stuff. It is not jealousy or anything IMO, its just human nature. You try to appreciate what you can afford and not cry over what you couldn't and sometimes ridiculing better things is a way of feeling good.
Personally I always liked Mercedes but preferred BMW over it. Never liked the C class except the coupe and I only bought it because I didn't find a decent used BMW. Whenever someone asks me what car I drive, I tell them its the C coupe and it is cheaper than the same year Toyota

LOL same here. and if they keep buggin i just say E Class, once u throw any class at them they usually stop asking. Either because they dont know what u mean by E Class and think its stupid of them if they were to ask you or because they just instantly know. i dont know, some people are weird haha

I went to a restaurant one time because my friend works as a host. And i was just there talking to her and one of her co-workers said "oh you drive"( because i was playing with my key which is attached to my house keys) they didnt see what car im driving but they asked what kind and i said a mercedes. and one girl was like " ohhh WOW a mercedes, im sorry" and i was just thinking. WTH i didnt even say anything bragging about it and the other girl replies "oh i drive a bentley"

Outside America Chevy means squat. There is no prestige in that bow tie badging, as well what innovations has that brand brought to market? For years I would only drive a Japanesse car (American ones are junk) it was not until I drove my co-workers car (the car I own today) that I would admit that there is a huge difference in the feel and driving dynamics of the car. The car (MB) feels like it was cast from a solid ingot of steel. The steering and braking are so much more precise.
Next time, call your friend's Cobalt, a 'Cavalier', see what he says. American cars have no brand equity and that is why they keep changing the names so people can forget about the past. (save for Mustang, Corvette).
I don't hear people aspire to own a Chevy; and when was the last time you heard some one say 'if I won a million dollars I would buy a Chevrolet?'
