you could always swap out with a crate 350. i've just come to the realization that droppin $$$ into these motors is pointless. i spent bout $900 for my exhaust and thats all I'm gonna do. For what you/we spend on in engine mods for measly gains, audi/bmw's with the same invested money dont walk... they RUN away. sad :o( thats one of the things that kinda got me down about buyin my car.

now a new c350 on the otherhand....

The main thing to making things lighter is to drive with less fuel, possibly without the spare tire nor tools, and empty everything out of the car.

Omit the tools first, since the MBUSA roadside assistance has all the tools anyways.

Then start to omit:

CDs, tapes (no tape deck I hope), water bottles, magazines, toilet paper, first aid kit, floormats (other than the driver's floormat), change, ashtray inserts, cigarette lighters, cell phone chargers, contents of glove box (except for registration and insurance paperwork), and other non-essential items.

Omitting those non-essential items will save you approximately 13 pounds/6 kilos.

But definitely the resonator weighs alot. I just currently changed my muffler and man my stock one was super heavy .Not sure how much my remus weigh though

Remove all the carpet. That should ba about 50lbs

only keep a 1/4 tank of gas in at a time. on our 16 gal. tanks, you'll shave off around 72lbs

I said have less petrol in the tank as well, but now I'm thinking this may not be as desirable as I had previously thought.

The C350 is extremely front heavy (weight distribution) and since the petrol's weight is mostly in the rear, this would upset the weight distribution even more.

I'm thinking the battery should be changed to a racing battery that is only half the weight. But disconnecting the battery brings about several problems as well.

Rotational weight aside....every 100# is only about a 1/10 in the quarter. I would venture a guess that not many of us here are good enough drivers to really ever be that consistant anyway.

I too am a tinker-er, however a Benz engine isn't a run of the mill Chevy with a smally block. It's quite hard to get any power out of these at a reasonable amount of money.

The biggest factor is that the Benz engines are already tuned farther than the GM small blocks. MBs are even tuned higher than the V-8s available in the Vette (GM's top-of-the-line selections):

C230 (M271) 189hp 1.8L = 105 hp/L
C350 268hp 3.5L = 76.6 hp/L
LS7 505hp 7.0L = 72.1 hp/L
LS2 400hp 6.0L = 66.7 hp/L

Just opening up the exhaust on a domestic car typically yields sizable results, but not on a Benz.

You get more of what you pay for up front, but getting more power out will definitely take cubic dollars.

I wasn't really- I was just refering to the money it takes to mod these cars to make them faster. A simple cat-back system can cost 2x-3x more for these cars than most other cheaper cars. Partially do to supply/demand, and the fact there aren't as many supplies for these cars either.

OHC engines normally do cost more to mod. But the Mercedes engine is more than most of the domestic and Japanese OHC engines. I bought a set of Crower cams for my Focus for $265. I would venture a guess that, even if I could find them for my Benz, they would be quite a bit more than that.

That's a great point, they are pretty well setup from the factory and a catback seems to do less than on a domestic V8. For instance, SuperSprint got 286bhp out of a stock 3.5L MB on the dyno and 298bhp with a full exhaust change. On one hand it's pretty amazing you can make 300 at the crank on the 3.5L just by upgrading the exhaust but still, they only got 12hp out of [correction] a set of headers. I've seen a Ford 5.0L get 25hp at the wheels on a dyno just from a set of shorty headers.

It is easily tweaked (inexpensively) for much more. Alas, modding a Mercedes requires commensurate werewithal.

True, but the S2k is impressive especially because it is an NA engine whereas the M271 is supercharged.
